Time for another remake.

This is the most important film to me, and I watched it in a certain day every year, take it as a festival, And after my 13th anniversary, watching it still feels like the first time I watched it.

And now I'm ready for more. 30 years after the first remake, I guess it would be a good time to make a 2nd remake. Change the background into 21th century, more or less same story line, same Scarface.

If anyone thought the same, guess who's director? who's Scarface? and what's the new little friend to say hello to will be like?

No they should leave it alone, it won't ever be on par with this version. Who could play Tony Montana?

Problem is different Latinos look rather different. Most of the hit men could not pass for Caribbean Hispanics who are most Caucasian and/or Negro mixture in heritage. When I saw the Central American/Mexican Amerindian looking Hispanics in this movie that claimed to be Cuban or Rican or whatever, it didn't look right at all. I'm not even Hispanic/Latino myself and I can look and tell between them.

The over-the-top-ness of this classic can't be topped, only parodied.

But if it must be remade, Benedict Cumberbatch for Tony Montana!

If an Italian-American could do it, why not an English actor? And in term of English actors, who better than Benedict Cumberbatch? Patrick Stewart maybe, but he's too old, methinks.

In any event, nobody could ever top Al Pacino as Tony Montana.

Someone else suggested on a forum that Edward Norton could play the role lol, he got flamed for 3 pages.
Awesome!

Maybe we can jump out of box. I mean, first Scarface ain't Cuban. We don't have to make another immigrate story about a Cuban outlaw. Maybe they can try something new, and there's a lot of options.

I still think Benedict Cumberbatch would be an interesting choice, but I now favor this guy as the new Tony Montana:

LOL. You do know Pacino is not hispanic?

reply

what an insult to pacino using this useless actor

I wasn't trying to type caste based on looks and I'm not that kind of person. I've been around many different nationalities of Latinos so I have a sense of where one hails from based on looks and aura. Pacino can definitely pass for a Caribbean Hispanic due to many that come in his flavor. But his little short buddy and the other guy that got chain sawed were definitely more Central/South American Hispanic. Im not saying there aren't exemptions but when you grew up in communities around Latinos and you study a bit of history you get a sense of how ppl look like from region to region.

reply

Does Andy Garcia look Hispanic? Because he looks like he could be Al Pacino's son, he looks very Italian to me.

I agree. Although Pacino's 1983 version was actually a remake, he was a perfect fit as Tony Montana, and even though his character died at the end, the film itself was still pretty spectacular. Leonardo DiCaprio was actually just announced as the "new" Tony Montana. Enough with the remakes already! Which reminds me. They want to remake Mary Poppins, too! How many more film franchises is Hollywood looking to ruin, here? Whatever happened to original ideas, too, instead of milking and/or dumping on treasured franchises?

reply

From what their saying about the reboot, their looking for a strong male lead and so far that is heading towards Michael Cera which is gonna be great to see him playing the great Tony Montana. This movie is to old and outdated also to violent, the new version is supposed to be more focused on the romance and drama with comedy as well. This will be a good direction for the movie since the original failed to be able to deliver to audiences what they really wanted.

That may well be the case now. However, back in '83 this version pretty much was what audiences wanted.

*beep* the remake, why try and improve on perfection?

reply

To be honest, wtf was the original 1930s Scarface based on? There was no Cocaine nor Coca Epidemic back then..

reply

liquor during prohibition

and i think its been pretty much redone with breaking bad even half the guest stars where in scareface

reply

Robert Downey Jr. looks like Al Pacino.

reply

Noticed when the first time seeing him.

You wouldn't be able to do the cocaine era. Maybe terrorism.

I don't think these kids understand that. Both Scarface films were great because they were exact representations of the times. Maybe if they set it in another country, it would make sense. But in America the kingpin drug lord era is over. The prohibition era is over. So it wouldn't have the "feel" of reality as the first two. It is set up for failure.

I don't think the drug kingpin era is over. It's just different drugs now. There's still someone at the top of that business.

Really?! Like who? Back then, during the crack/cocaine era drug kingpins in America where widely known! The FBI, media and society all knew who they were, but because they kept their dirty hands so clean, they were untouchable.

That's why I said..."In America". Not Mexico

reply

Yeah they should do one portraying Osama Bin Laden. Would be hilarious.

reply

Absolutely not. This is a great movie and should be left alone.

When God made Tom Cruise, he was only joking.
