Why does everyone think this movie is so shockingly violent?

It had to be edited twice to avoid an X rating, and everyone thinks it's one of the most shockingly violent movies ever made. Did I watch the same movie? There was lots of shooting, but they weren't graphic at all, I've seen more graphic shootings in PG-13 movies. Aside from the language and drugs, the only violent scene that makes this movie deserve its R rating is the chainsaw scene, but that scene still wasn't very graphic. We didn't actually see any severed limbs, we just saw a bit of blood spraying. There are many movies that are much more violent and graphic. The Indiana Jones series is much more violent and graphic.

First of all, no, you haven't seen a pg-13 movie that was more violent/graphic, because that doesn't exist. Other than that I agree with you, it's really not that violent of a movie, but at the time of its release it was so much more shocking than anything else of the time that it's reputation lived on. Same thing with a Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, and other films from that era that wouldn't be considered that graphic today, but still have a reputation as being the worst of the worst for violence.

I genuinely believe Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple Of Doom are much more graphic than Scarface, although the violence isn't as frequent. In case you haven't already seen them, watch these scenes and then cite at least one scene from Scarface that's more graphic.

By the way I'm not trying to be a condescending prick, I really enjoy film-related debates, and I don't consider you any lesser than me for disagreeing with me.

I think it's got to do with the realism of the violence and the long term exposure. Indiana Jones is fantasy and it's only a 5 second shot of the faces melting, whereas scar face has a long bloody shootout, as well as many other shocking scenes of sex and drug use.

shocking scenes of sex and drug use

Having just watched this at the local independent cinema, unless they edited it (which is unlikely), I don't believe there was a single sex scene in the entire movie. If there was, it was so unmemorable to not be in any way considered shocking (seeing as I can't remember it).

I used the word shocking because it's the one the title used, the only sex scene isn't technically a sex scene and you're right, it's not very shocking,I'm just trying to explain why it is thought of as really graphic.

I think the bathtub dismemberment scene has a lot to do with it, no?
