Question about the egg...

Why would Lana choose that to be the thing to hold hostage? I doubt she was an expert on crystal decorations, and let’s face it, there was a lot more valuable things about.

reply

She probably knew it was a mantel place fixture and something that would be noticed as soon as the parents returned.

Thanks! That makes sense!

Not only does the egg serve as a good barganing chip so Lana can extort Joel but I sense the egg is a symbol for his innocence. I say this because it is stolen twice, first by Lana then by Guido, both of whom represent the main corrupting personalities Joel interacts with. There are also a few shots where the camera just quietly hovers over the mantle with this egg standing illuminated against a blank wall as if there is deeper meaning in it. Also at the end when he is buying his stuff back from Guido the last item he gets is the egg which Vicky chucks high in the air as Joel makes a slow-motion, diving save as if it is the most important item. Soon after this scene his parents arrive home and his Mom yells at him because she finds "a tiny crack inside" the egg that wasn't there before, which implies that his moral purity or point of view has been compromised. Joel is defiantly represented by the egg here since he is her offspring, his name is even GoodSON.

That is a great analogy!

reply

*beep* I wish I was as smart as you.

reply

The egg is kinda like the briefcase in Pulp Fiction...it matters less why and what the value is...but it moves the plot along and obviously is very important to all that hold it.

reply

A MacGuffin!

reply

Indeed. An Egg MacGuffin.

I don't have a dog. And furthermore, my dog doesn't bite. And furthermore, you provoked him.

reply

I hope you are ashamed of yourself for that.

All that others say about the symbolism of the egg is to the point.

But you are mistaken about Lana, she WAS an expert on high end material goods. She is constantly going through Joel's house and noticing and commenting on the high profile labels and value of everything in the house from the silverware to the rugs, etc. That's why we (and Joel) must suspect her of being part of the household robbery in the end, when everything is sold back to Joel for very specific pricing.

Maybe Lana is wrong about the value of the egg. But in the movie, Joel thinks the egg is worth a lot more than $300 so we are supposed to go with that.

reply

I'm still wondering how much was the egg worth and how did it get cracked?

And how is it that neither Joel or his dad can see the crack, but his mom saw it immediately...?

reply

Because she knew there was an embryonic McGuffin in the egg.
