Why is it not that good even though Coppola made it?

Anyone know why this movie isn’t good even though you have the Godfather and Apocalypse Now director making it?

Opinions vary, I thought it was a good film.

The theatrical version wasn’t good because initially, they cut way too much from the story. However, there was still a lot of potential, because there were great performances, very emotional scenes, and a very moving musical soundtrack.

But then came the complete novel version which brought back in all the scenes that were cut and should have been in the theatrical version in the first place. You’d think now you have the perfect Outsiders movie. Oh, but wait! Then Francis Ford Coppola thought it was a great idea to throw away his perfectly good musical soundtrack in favor of heavy rock music that completely takes you out of the movie, so now it’s back to being fucked up. It’s like this guy can’t do anything right when it comes to The Outsiders.

Hmmmm.... I didn't know there was more than one version of this film. So, I decided to look up the movie on my Roku search engine and there's three versions of it, one that's an hour and 50 minutes, one that's an hour and a half, and one that's two hours and 3 minutes. I wonder which version I saw?

Probably the 1:50... I might have to check out the 2 hour version.

I mean, it’s great for seeing a more complete adaptation of the book. I just wish there was a way to throw that music out. Not only does it not fit with the movie, but it even drowns out the actors’ dialogue in some of the more important, intense scenes. When it came to watching movies in the past, I would have some complaints about certain movies but never about the soundtrack and never this bad.

Wait a minute, there are three versions of this movie? I thought they were only two: the theatrical version and the complete novel version.

reply

Well, "versions" might be a little misleading. What I mean is that there are three releases of this film with different lengths of time. At least, that's what comes up when I search it on Roku.

However, it's been a while since I've seen this film, I don't remember the music that well but I might have to re-watch this movie pretty soon.

I thought it was excellent and I must have watched it half a dozen times.
I read the book twice too, I think it’s a good story and a well produced picture.

Roger Ebert, a critic I quite liked but didn’t always agree with gave it only 2 1/2 stars and intimated that it was too ‘Stagey’ and oddly lit…
