School field trip and a group of them wandered in.
What I'm wondering is how so many kids got in without anyone noticing...

The Children were on a school Picknick. theyr Teachers were There. Ponyboy and Johnny thaught they might have started the fire with a dropped Cigarette. So They felt responcible. that's why They went in the church to save the Children.

It has been MANY years since I had read the book and I seriously wondered why in the hell these schoolkids had taken a field trip to an old abandoned church that was a lawsuit waiting to happen.
They weren't taken to the church. They were taken to the countryside/ meadow. The church just happened to be near.
And in the early 60s, the staff wouldn't be hovering over the kids. They would have been allowed to run around and play. They just happened to stumble upon the church.
