Required reading?

Did anybody besides me have this as required reading in school?

I had a contemporary novels class in High School where this was included, along with "Of Mice and Men", "Bless the Beasts and the Children" and "The Good Earth" by Pearl Buck to name a few.

If there's a way to screw something up, the "O'Commie regime" will find it EVERY SINGLE TIME!!

Teacher read it aloud in 7th grade (1972). I found it dated and trite. Ditto for the flick. Both tried to be profound and failed.

S.E. Hinton supposedly wrote it when she was 16. I wonder how "profound" you can really be at that age? Like Johnny Cade, how much of the world have you experienced by that age?

reply

It was required reading for me in seventh and eighth grade. I didn't mind, though. It was good reading.

Yes. My kids had to read it. I didn't have but I read it for fun after I saw the movie. I was in Jr high.

reply

I was in Jr. High as well, but it wasn't required. Funny, that was 1980 and I clearly remember sitting during study in the wood shop, all the sawdust around my chair and getting to that final little twist at the end.

I still have a copy at home.

reply

It was require for us in 6th or 7th grade.

reply

Yes, this was required reading in either Junior High or High School along with And I Heard the Owl Call My Name (or whatever its title was/is). My class went to a special Tuesday or Wednesday (I believe it was a Tuesday) morning screening of Bless the Beast and the Children around the time of its release. I don't recall reading the book and that was second-grade, I think.

I'll let you know when I come-up with a new signature, .

reply

Apparently, we were supposed to read the book in 8th grade. I don't actually remember reading it though, and I was one of those students that did all of my work. I do remember watching the movie in class though.
