Greatest Ever Cast?
Maybe not at the time, but I dare you name another movie with more actors who became bigger stars.
shareMaybe not at the time, but I dare you name another movie with more actors who became bigger stars.
shareHard to argue with that. The only one I can think of that comes close is Diner.
What about It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)?
shareMost of them were already well-known or big stars. Think the OP meant unknowns who went on to become famous.
He only asked about ones that became big, but fine, how about these?
The Last Picture Show (1971)
American Graffiti (1973)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Platoon (1986)
Do the Right Thing (1989)
Dazed and Confused (1993)
Black Hawk Down (2001)
Mean Girls (2004)
Sure, The Outsiders was a vehicle for a bunch of big actors, but it hardly seems like a real stand-out, especially as folks like Tom Cruise were barely in it. And then the subject asked about the greatest cast, not best vehicle, and on that score, I'd point to landmarks like
The Player (1992)
Ocean's Eleven (2001)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Boogie Nights (1997)
and a whole slew from this guy's list: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls000044613/
But seriously, was there ever a bigger cast than It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)? I challenge anyone to top that movie on that score!
Excellent list. Also, A Bridge Too Far has quite a lineup as well.
shareWow, that is a heck of a cast! It even includes some great foreign actors such as Liv Ullmann and Dirk Bogarde.
shareRight?! Also very prominent German actors like Wolfgang Preiss and Hardy Krüger. All star cast for sure. Great, great movie... once you get past the semi awkward music score. One of my faves and I'm a big WWII buff.

Who would have predicted this line up would be among the biggest stars of the 80's.
Or that the guy with the smallest role among the lead characters would be the biggest movie star for 30 years.
The Great Escape from the sixties has an incredible cast as well.
Steve McQueen
James Garner
James Coburn
Richard Attenborough
Charles Bronson
David McCallum
Donald Pleasence
And all had impressive careers. But have to agree The Outsiders had an incredible cast.
It does have a great cast but so did The Counselor which I watched yesterday, that had Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Michael Fassbender but the movie was not the best lol. It was kinda good.
real human being and a real hero
Yeah, with that cast, I thought the Consellor will be a sure thing, yet... Yank, I just didn't get the point...
shareHave to agree: retrospectively (as almost all of them weren't stars at the time), and accidentally, The Outsiders has one of the greatest casts (in terms of stars) of all movies.
You'd have to look at those 60s and 70s all-star war epics for anything similar, and these would be established stars. The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far spring to mind.
A Bridge Too Far had the following cast:
Sean Connery
Laurence Olivier
Gene Hackman
Robert Redford
Anthony Hopkins
Dirk Bogarde
Michael Caine
Ryan O'Neal
Edward Fox
James Caan
Maximilian Schell
Hardy Kruger
Liv Ullman
Elliott Gould
Denholm Elliott
and
John Ratzenberger (not a star at the time)
Actually, that might surpass The Outsiders. The salary bill on A Bridge Too Far would have been huge though, while The Outsiders would have been quite cheap (as most of them weren't stars yet), so The Outsiders might be the cheapest all-star-cast movie ever made.

all you basterds are wrong
True Romance had
Tony soprano
Dennis Hooper
Brad Pitt
Denzel Washington
Lou diamond philips
...and more!
Gary Oldman
Christian Slater
Patricia Arquette
Christopher Walken
Val Kilmer
Samuel L. Jackson
(I don't know about Denzel Washington and Lou Diamond Phillips though?)

Most of the big actors in True Romance were already household names by 1993.
Outsiders was the breaktrough of most of those 80s/90s hearthrobs.
A great cast indeed! But in addition to all the big stars, I was amused to find Tom Waits the great, drunken singer/song-writer/poet/actor in the cast credits, as well as Flea, the bass players for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who ironically played a "Soc"!
shareRumble Fish's cast was awesome too.... classier even.
