If the Socs are so rich and happy....

then why do they spend any real time picking fights with those lower than them? What morons.

Well as Cherry told Ponyboy at the drive in, things are tough all over. So maybe they're not always as happy as others might think. Outward affluence can often be a mask to hide people's fears and insecurities. Often people feel the need to look down on others in order to feel superior.

reply

Yeah, it's never easy for some, even with more money. Cherry suffered differently, but it was suffering, nonetheless.

reply

Money doesn't guarantee happiness. I know several people who are proof of that.

"It is rare for people to be asked the question which puts them squarely in front of themselves."

reply

LiteraryLane, I completely agree; I know an Uncle and Aunt who have a business who are just miserable. We are talking upper-class money, yet it seems unsatisfactory and unfulfilling to them.

As it says in the Kris Kristofferson song... "Everybody's got to have somebody to look down on"

Poor man wanna be rich... Rich man wanna be king.

I always figured it was because they had no real problems, so they have to go out and make problems. Boredom too, since they have nothing else going on.

reply

I've been poor*, and I've been, well, well off. Different problems.

Now, don't get me wrong, not having to worry about money is a big joy to me and something I'm grateful for and haven't lost that gratefulness over the last 40 years, but it doesn't end problems. Money takes some problems away and brings others.

*I remember the night I spent the last $4 I possessed on this Earth at a Subway sandwich shop at about 1AM. I had earlier put $20 of gas in my Gran Torino and the $4 was the last money I had. This was about 1977 or so. I drove home that night knowing I was tapped and that just chapped my ass. I had trouble sleeping that night and that $4 sandwich felt like a wasted chunk of lead. It would be several years before I started making real money but from that moment I started saving like a fiend - even if it was pocket change - going hungry at times, and working side jobs when I could get them. By the time I got married at 27 I had a college degree, good job, and a large down payment saved for a house, pretty good for a young black man in the 1980s from a lower middle class family.

Guessing it's just difficult for them to let go of a rivalry that was supposedly started by one of the greasers? Nah.

Apart from them trying to find any excuse to blame the greasers for whatever problems (or lack thereof) they face, it could be nothing more than the socs being complete a-holes without nothing better to do. And as it’s been mentioned, it’s not unlikely things couldn’t have been going smoothly for them in their own lives (from potentially having lousy parents to being involved with drugs). But one thing’s for sure, they were pricks who did look down on anyone who didn’t come from their circle. And that, my friend, is something that's always been part of human nature.

Look at all the people that have fame & fortune that take their lives. You never know what is really going in people's lives.

Because the town only had a rundown drive in and a Tasty Freeze. No where to spend money, hang out. The kids are all bored.
