Just saw this for the first time since that remake is coming and I have no idea why people are calling this some classic not to be messed with. I literally did not laugh or smile once. I know it's all subjective anyway but I always think the classic movies are so much more funny than the new ones. Like Airplane and Planes trains and Automobiles. Idk why I didn't like it.

Lots of comedy movies nowadays tend to copy this one, so I can probably see why it wouldn't be as funny to someone seeing it for the first time now. I actually saw it when I was like 6 or 7, so I have a lot of nostalgia for it.

Re-read that. He said he liked PTaA, and Airplane. And since he liked those, he was wondering why he didn't like Vacation.
I can tell you why. These are all very different genres of comedy.
While PTaA and Airplane rely on slapstick and 5th grade jokes for laughs, Vacation is much more subtle in it's humor.
It's an all-time great. Even after seeing it probably 50 times, I still catch little things going on that I didn't catch before.
I think it has to do with how old you were when you first saw it. I first saw it and enjoyed it as a preteen and teen and loved it then. If I were to see it for the first time as an adult, I may not have liked it.
I remember seeing "The Jerk" as a kid and thinking it was a comedic masterpiece. I got it on DVD a few years ago after not seeing it for 30 years and thought, "what the hell is this crap?" LOL
I agree I just saw this for the first time and found it totally unnamusing predictable and dull

Just watched the original four vacation movies for the first time, and while I didn't love any of them I laughed the most at this one. The later ones try to recreate some of the same gags over and over again, while this one felt the most freshly crass.
My biggest disappointment was Christmas Vacation, I kept hearing great things about it and I sadly found it very overrated. :/
(The worst though was definitely Eauropean Vacation.)
I've seen funnier, i.e. Revenge of the Nerds, Caddyshack, etc. I wouldn't say this one is a classic.
