This movie needs to be recut and rereleased

For starters everyone hates the sound editing. The dialogue is WAY TOO LOW TO BE HEARD PROPERLY. Everyone who sees this movie says that. I'm not saying replace the Tangerine Dream soundtrack, but some sound editing can spiff it up a bit and make it back off when dialogue needs to be heard. We know of the director's cut that's 3.5 hours long. That is WAY TOO LONG. The editing in the theatrical release seems a little rushed and clumsy, especially after the monster escapes.

I'm saying someone who knows what they're doing should take all the original footage and soundtrack for this movie and completely recut the whole thing. In the right hands it could make this a much better film.

Yes. Yes. Yes. This ^

Unfortunately, rumor has it Mann was offered the opportunity to do just this by Paramount after they had had a good experience with Collateral and he declined. This is not unlike what happened with David Lynch and Dune. The footage seems to exist to make both films MUCH more coherent, but both directors seem too ashamed or frustrated or something to revisit the projects even when offered.

I don't believe Mann is actually standing in the way of this being released but without the input of the now acclaimed director, Paramount seems to have lost interest in releasing it. So who would restore it? And why would they? And why would Paramount or Olive or Hens Tooth or whomever want to invest in such an endeavor for such a small legion of (albeit extremely enthusiastic) fans?

I really feel like we missed our chance with this one. Mann was approached, at least informally, about it at pretty much the height of the DVD (and home video purchasing) era and nothing came of it. I'm therefore prepared to live with just a widescreen remaster of the theatrical cut (just THAT would be a huge improvement over the laser-disc version that's been kicking around for years).

But it's good to see the dream is still alive.
