The music - Gahd Awful
The music was not right for this film --- it was like a shoddy scifi film music ---
They should have used traditional horror and ww2 era movies .

The most god awful thing in the film was Mckellen's acting. I worship the man, but this part was all wrong for him. Hammed and over acted with a terrible American (?) accent. The music was transcendent, particularly the opening sequence.
shareMcKellen is the King of Ham. Let's say the Father of Hamlet of Ham.
Even in Xmen he was having voice quiver-offs with Patrick Stewart.
I got the impression the movie, including the score, was meant to convey a sense of distortion. A feeling that nothing was quite as it seemed.
It's one of the movie's strengths, imho.
I think the music is one of it's strong points. I can see the mix being an issue, but I didn't really have much trouble understanding dialog on the recent blu-ray release which uses the original theatrical mix. There were maybe two times I turned on subs for a second to catch a line I didn't get, but I like the Tangerine Dream music quite a bit.
