Originally a comedy?
Is it true this started as a comedy titled Jaws 3/People Nil and was re-edited with extra material shot at last minute?

shareYou're half right. The third film of the franchise was originally intended to be a self-parody titled "JAWS 3, PEOPLE 0" but the script was thrown out before production began, supposedly because Spielberg threatened never to work with Universal again. I'm not sure if that part is true, though.
A new, serious script was written. JAWS 3-D was that "serious" script.

Wow. That's pretty interesting info! I'm surprised he didn't keep his promise to never work with Universal again after seeing this--there is no way that this turned out any better than a parody would have! :P
"Why couldn't the monkey arrange this from INSIDE the garbage can?"
You can read the script here: http://www.forcesofgeek.com/2009/06/jaws-week-true-tale-of-national.html

Close. It was going to be a parody of Jaws and its ripoffs, but was changed to being a sequel.
My guitar teacher once gave his assessment of the series:
Jaws - The original, and one of his favorite movies ever.
Jaws 2 - Unnecessary, but enjoyable.
Jaws 3-D: So bad, it's good.
Jaws: The Revenge: So bad, it's just...bad.
I told him Jaws 3-D was intended originally to be a comedy. He said it probably would have turned out to be better, although Jaws 3-D was still pretty funny in its own right. He added that the sad part was that it wasn't intended to be.
