How much did the townspeople know?
Do you think the entire town was in on the entirety of the plan? Obviously they were in on some of it, and wanted to protect the factory. But would everyone be cool if they knew the ultimate goal was to kill millions of kids and adults? And a day or two later knowing the army would come in and level the town and probably kill them all? I think they thought Cochran was the towns savior and respected him and feared him. They probably knew something was odd about it, but they were not allowed in the final processing area where all the witchcraft stuff was going on. I just don't think they knew everything. Well not all of them anyway.
