COUGAR or PEDO?

I'm not criticizing the relationship, just the fact that if Ellen was a man and Jonathan a girl, the relationship would be regarded as "sick" and that is sexual bias.
Personally, I believe the relationship is fine because Jonathan is an older teenager, not a little kid. People need to know the difference. Sure, the relationship may not be ideal, but the only harm that came out of it was the fact Ellen lied about being single. Jonathan wasn't emotionally scarred by her "rape", far from it, he had a hot time.

Neither.

It's obvious that Skip's mother has a horrible relationship with his father. She's a deeply troubled woman seeking acceptance, affection and validation she's clearly not getting at home.

Having money solves a great many problems but it can't fix everything. In some cases it can make things worse.

A lot of Americans are ignorant to this, not just you, but you obviously have no idea what "pedophilia" is. It is when one is attracted to a prepubescent individual.

Andrew McCathary's character was obviously a physically mature adult. I think the term for which your limited intellect is searching would be the term "statutory rapist", not "pedophile".

Americans really can be fat and stupid at times.

You sound obese and ignorant.

i think it's sexual bias that women are labelled "sluts" for sleeping around, while young men are encouraged to get out there and become experienced. unfortunately we live in a culture where sexual harrassment is A Thing and the wide margin of cases directed toward a particular gender. call it "patriarchy" call it "culture", but this is merely a reaction to what is understood to be a predatory status quo.

i agree that this could have v easily become rapey tho. i never felt that bisset was taking advantage of him however.

Andrew's a senior in high school so he's 18 which is the age of consent in the US

reply

Nope; you don't turn 18 until the "spring semester" of the senior year. She f@cked him on Halloween - remember all the costumes? In fact, he could still be 16, because he could still be a senior and be born December 31.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

She was genuinely shocked when she stumbled upon his ID and saw that he was actually only 18. She honestly thought he was older. She may be a poor judge of age, but she didn't intend to rob the cradle.

reply

It's possible though that her shock and snap decision to run away upon seeing his ID wasn't because she found out that he was only 17/18, it was the fact that it was his "Vernon Academy" ID, meaning that he went to the same school and was in the same year (and therefore probably in the same classes) as her son.

I think we are meant to feel sympathetic towards the woman in this film. If the gender roles were reversed they wouldn't have cared about that as much. American Beauty kind of comes close to a similar story but with gender roles reversed.
