Ralphie’s mom wasn’t a good cook

The oatmeal she made for Randy looked disgusting!
When Randy opens the toilet lid to pee, the scene switches to the mom opening a lid of awful red cabbage!
No wonder the Old Man was always cussing!

Not crazy about the mom's meatloaf in the meatloaf pan either. I'm not a big fan of meatloaf but my sons like it, so when I make it for them, I form the loaf like a bread and put it on a slotted broiler pan so it drips the fat out.

I think the point of that scene was that food in the 1950s was not like Food in the 80s when it came out.

No kidding? Wow!
It was not meant to be a serious post, just a fun observation. 😄

mom makes a great taco salad i bet!

So glad you’re back, nuts!

The movie is set in 1940, not the 1950s. The year is embossed on Ralphie's Radio Orphan Annie decoder badge. They came out with new ones each year, with the date on them. I have my dad's from 1937.

Sorry.

Let’s also talk about the turkey. First, it was way too small for a family of four. Especially since the narrator was talking about eating leftovers for days! Mom should have bought a much bigger turkey!

Second, why did she take the turkey out of the oven and place it on the table when it wasn’t fully cooked? You baste or add seasoning when it’s in the oven. The Okd Man could have eaten some and got worms! 😄

Agree with the comments, but the reason it was a turkey that was removed from the oven for basting was for the movie plot - the book on which this movie is based was quite different. A Christmas Story is based on several writings of Jean Sheppard, and in the book (a compilation of his short stories), it wasn't a turkey, it was a ham (and a couple of pages of the book was the story about the old man picking the "right ham" and mom's long involved cooking process). The ham was also for Easter dinner, not Christmas. In the book, the ham was done cooking and was left out to rest before serving when the Bumpus hounds got to it.

The ham incident was the final straw that also set up a chapter on the old man's war with the Bumpus', a hillbilly family who squatted in the house next door and the filth and disgusting way the left the yard.

That big pot of cabbage (or whatever the hell it was) was disgusting.

"Red" cabbage sir, red cabbage...

Didn't she say it was Ralphie's favorite or that he loved it or something?

Judging by the way the Old Man kept going after the turkey I think he would disagree with you.
