Doesn't hold up very well
Don't get me wrong it's got some funny moments, but the whole film just feels disjointed and drags aside from a couple of moments. Not as good as I remembered it.

shareI look at A Christmas Story as a nostalgic film that is pretty timeless. Nostalgia doesn’t have to “hold up” but it portrays a more simple time and the relative innocence of Christmas through a young boy’s eyes. IMHO... :)

shareI love it more and more each time I watch it and I’ve been watching it since it came out. But everyone is different. It’s a lot to do with nostalgia for me though. I just hope when I am watching it next Christmas the world is in a better place. Merry Christmas 🎄
shareWe didn't see it in the theater, but have seen it every year since it first aired on TV a couple of years later. We enjoy it as much every time. It's unclear why you decided to troll fans of the movie, but given the string of responses here, you failed, GBP.
shareThe OP is just stating his opinion, which does not make him a "troll". That being said, I disagree with him. The movie has withstood the test of nearly four decades, and is a classic.

Makes you wonder why someone would go to the extra trouble to try to rile up its fans. That's trolling.
shareI never watched this movie, so I don't have any sentimental value attached to it. I thought it was pretty meh, and plain weird in some spots. Might also be because I'm not American.

shareIt's been a year since I watched it, so I don't remember much of it. The whole fantasy bit with the bandits was pure cringe and went on too long. The running joke with the leg lamp I also didn't get, too Looney Tunes for it to be in a movie. The dad seemed really thick, which is a trope that you get hit on the head over in American movies and TV shows. The family dynamic also seemed off, like the whole thing was actually some kind of eerie nightmare played off as fun and games (that might also be due to the acting). It's all a bit over the top to the point where it's just not very funny to me. I remember the bit with the Santa in the mall also went on way too long. I think that's my main point of contention: the jokes were really stretched out.
The movie looks really bad too. I guess it was a low budget flick, but man. Still bad.
I chuckled here and there but not nearly enough. I was expecting something way better because of the high ratings and everybody praising it.
Ok. The story is narrated by an adult sounding voice. Right? Well, that’s because it’s an adult Ralphie remembering his childhood. That’s why everything seems so fantastic and over blown. That’s also why it’s filmed strangely as well, because it’s memories we are seeing.
For instance, maybe when Ralphie was young one year at Christmas, one of the Bumpuse’s dogs got inside and started eating the turkey while it cooled on the table and they had to throw it out. What we saw, and Ralphie remembers us that a pack came inside and stole the turkey and then left.
The movie holds up very well, you have shitty taste..

shareIt's a classic even if not a great film. No awards (who cares). I'm glad it was made the way it was. Today the script would have been different (even though it's the 40's) and that's not a good thing.
"The Wonder Years" owes a lot to this film. I didn't watch that show so I never really noticed.
