What Were These Women Doing?

There was a scene, I think it was in part 2, where there were a bunch of women standing around a huge map, pushing these sticks around on it. What were they doing?

They're WAF's. What they are doing is placing Airplanes where they are on the map so that they know their location. When one is shot down, they remove it.
