Russian front scene?

I saw this when it was first aired back in the 80s and I'm trying to remember a scene with Robert Mitchum. He was visiting the Russian front around the time of the battle for Moscow. He looks at some German engineers trying to cross a river...I think. I don't recall much fighting scenes for that part of the war is this movie. Is my memory correct about this?

As I recall, much of the action in those sequences occurs offscreen. Until Pug goes to that church tower to join Pamela. Then they are dive-bombed by a plane I am still trying to identify. I suppose it was intended to be a Stuka.

Oh ok, thanks. But am I right about him watching Germans cross a river?

reply

I think he saw them preparing to cross a river. He mentions to the Soviet soldier that he could open up on the Germans from his vantage point, but the soldier replies that it would give away their position and says "No thank you, Mr. American." They were actually waiting until the Germans actually crossed before opening fire.

The planes had straight wings and the nose looked like that of a Piper Cub. The German tanks seen through the observer's scope looked like Pershings, but I'm not sure because I'm not an expert on such matters.
