Günther Meisner and Steven Berfkoff (actors who play Hitler)

Anyone else here thinks that both of the actors portraying Hitler were rather miscast or poorly directed? Having watched both Winds of War and War and Remembrance, I cannot help but feel the character of Hitler was deliberately made so one dimensional.

Günther Meisner, who plays Hitler in the Winds of war, was not only a bit too old; he also seemed stiff all the time. And yet, despite that, there seemed to be good with his dialogues and at times managed to find the right measure in his outbursts, so in the end he was passable.

With Steven Berkoff, in the second part (War and Remembrance) things got really out of hand. His portrayal of Hitler seemed to me as a mixture of a buffoon or a stooge and a mad dog that just keeps yelling and yelling. All he did was being over the top in this all the time and it's hard to believe Hitler would be like that with his inner circle. Not to mention he was not so much physically alike to Hitler. The reason why Dan Curtis, the director, decided for such a one dimensional and shallow portrayal of this character escapes me.

These things became even more obvious to me after seeing the new German movie THE DOWNFALL (DER UNTERGANG) in which Hitler is portrayed by the Swiss actor Bruno Ganz. He gave the best portrayal of Hitler I have seen so far. Evil without a doubt, yet believable and human, since Hitler was after all, a man.

If this series ever gets remade, I hope they made better casting choices of Hitler.

If you're a 'fan' of film portrayals of Hitler, you should check out The Hitler Filmography from McFarland publishers. It is invaluable to history film buffs. It makes an odd bookend to another book I have from them, Abraham Lincoln On Screen!

The whole realm of 'playing Hitler' is quite fascinating and makes for intriguing comparisons between performers.

It was published a few years ago, so missed a few of the recent ones. I would have loved to see how the author thought Ganz stacked up. I too consider his performance to be the standard for at least the next 20 years...if not indefinately.

You, Mr Neville, are the refuse of the past. You are discarded!

Günther Meisner was horrendous... The scene at Compiègne, the walk to the railway car when he salutes the soliders, it's embarrassing.

Steven Berkoff was certainly over the top, but.. I think that's what they wanted the role to be. Portray Hitler as a raving lunatic and the common viewer will be happy. He was A LOT better then Meisner..

Bruno Ganz was amazing in Downfall...

I read a few books on ole Adolph and he was one- dementinal

and dimwitted. A few books have tried to paint him as an intalect, but the ramblings put doubt on that.

He was and will never be a complex charicter, only those who chose to rewrite history(like Hitler liked to do) try to give him depth

Then there was Richard Basehart ("Voyage to The Bottom of the Sea") in 1960! And Bob Mitchum's brother, John, played Goering in that movie! I believe the same outfit did the movie, "Operation Eichmann" where Werner ("Col. Klink") Klemperer played Eichmann!

They're both pretty bad. Meisner seemed to have a slight speech impediment.

I was always partial to dear old Obiwan Kenobi (Alec Guiness) as Hitler in The Last 10 Days. He exuded both the insanity and overwhelmingly lostness of Der Fuhrer at the end of his days.
