Josh Brooks (Tommy Peterson)

I'm guessing this kid was originally intended to be a main character if the show had immediately gone to series after the original four-hour TV movie. He would have been the show's resident orphan, a constant reminder of the horrors of the invasion. I can't think of another reason that he's billed up front with the rest of the main cast, rather than with the guest stars. He only has two or three scenes.

When they went to the second miniseries, they dropped his character altogether.

You might be right about plans to use the character more in the future. But it's just as likely he simply had a very good agent that was able to secure that prominent billing for him. He is, after all, featured in both parts of the original mini series and his monologue about the abduction of his entire neighborhood is a highlight of the second part. When you watch the whole thing, Josh doesn't seem as important of a character as Caleb, Willie, Ruby or even Brad, but on paper before shooting, you could have made a case for it.

I'll also add that he's a much better actor than the kid they got to play Sean.
