Chiefs - Remake

If they did a remake, who would you like to see as the charcters?

An interesting question. Well, let's begin with my favorite character in the mini-series, Will Henry Lee. Obviously, Wayne Rogers is too old to play the character again if they ever did decide to do a remake, so it would have to be someone in his late thirties/early forties, preferably Southern (though any talented actor could put on a Southern accent). I think that perhaps Matthew McConaughey would be suited for the role. Maybe Nicolas Cage too, considering his usual sqeeky-clean All-American persona. Or maybe even Val Kilmer. Harry Connick Jr. Also comes to mind.

The next character I'll address is Hugh Holmes. He's got to be a man who would look convincing at 40ish (1924 segment) 60ish (1945 segment) and 80ish (1962 segment). Tom Hanks maybe? Or perhaps Gary Sinise?

Tyler Watts: Billy Dee Williams was phenomenal in the role (and much younger in real-life than his character was). So I think perhaps Don Cheadle or better still, Danzel Washinton.

Billy Lee: It has to be a man who can appear 30ish in the 1945 segment, then 50ish in the 1962 segment. Perhaps Ben Affleck?

Sonny Butts: Perhaps William Lee scott. He was real convincing as a mean and nasty violence-loving psycho in "Butterfly Effect."

Marshal Peters: I was going to suggest Will Smith, but now that I think it through, he's way too cool to play a simple, Southern mechanic/family man like Marshal. I'll have to come back to that one.

Tyler's wife: Halle Berry

Foxy Thunderburke: As with hugh Holmes, we need to see this character age from his mid 20s to his mid 60s. Hmmmm......I need to think about this.....

Foxy Thunderburke: Gary Oldman.

O.K., I'll give it a go!
Here's my choices:
Hugh Holmes/Jon Voight
Foxy/Ed Harris
Sonny Butts/Gary Sinese
Will Henry Lee/Will Patton
Chief "Skeeter" Willis/George Dzunza (spelling probably incorrect of last name)
Sonny Butts' Mom/Sissy Spacek
Billy Lee (Grown Up)/Matthew McCounahay
Marshall Peters/Andre Braugher
Chief Tyler Watts/Terrence Howard

Whew...wouldn't want to try to bank role a cast like that though.

That's the problem with making such broad, powerful movies like Chiefs today. You're not paying for actors, you're paying for egos. That's why you would want to get one or two big names to draw people in, and then fill out the rest of the cast with good supporting actors and strong newcomers.

Now, you might get lucky and have some bigger names want to attach themselves to the picture out of respect for the story and do so on the cheap. More likely you will be able to get some of the former actors to play different roles. Keith Carridine might be able to do a good Holmes and Billy Dee Williams might work as Jesse Cole.

I am so glad to see you all giving time to even think of this mini series classic. So much of what I grew to appreciate in fine television acting not only came from soap operas, but from shows like this too. Such an excellent cast for the original, when I think of it, and I really cannot see myself possessing the love for a remake as I do for the original, even though I would still check it out for comparison as well as because I am a fan of this great story. The way this series touched me forever is real, something I hope to never forget. The passing thoughts that came to mind regarding the films are really what drew me here today, and also, just while I read along the comments of all around these boards, I still get those wonderful tingles I did when I was watching it those years ago as a youngin.
