Original miniseries?

Does anybody have the original 6 hour version on vhs? I live in Sweden and I have never ever seen the full version, only the 3 hour version. Most of the Sonny Butts-story is missing in the shorter version. :(

Anybody?

How can they cut most of Sonny Butts? That's terrible! Brad Davis' performances is one of the most compelling I've ever seen on television! This mini-series really needs a better treatment. Truth is, I believe the complete series will be available someday on dvd. I know that's not much help, but I think it's the only thing you can do...unless you know someone in the US who can record it when it comes on...but who knows when it'll show up again?

reply

I agree. Davis' performance was absolutely priceless.

I was cleaning out my parents' basement and I came across some of my old videotapes, one of which was my recording of the original CBS broadcast of Chiefs from 1983. I'd be happy to make a copy for you, except that your country probably uses a different format than here in Canada. But if you want it copied, let me know.

Be careful. I bought the VHS tape of the show a long time ago. It should have been the complete series, but I noticed there was at least one scene missing. I think it may be out on DVD now. That may be a safer option.

I also have this on VHS, I recorded it when it first aired. At the moment, I am looking for a VCR that still has tracking because the tracking needs to be manually corrected so I can do a transfer to DVDs.

Replying to my own post. I bought this movie on DVD. Had to return it because it had the same missing scene as my VHS tape.

It's quite noticeable, too.

The missing scene goes like this:

When Hoss Spence comes to talk to Jesse Cole after taking over the Lee farm, his son Emmett gets down off the wagon to look at Dapple, Billy's horse. When Hoss talks about buying the horse as if Jesse has no choice, Joshua makes an off-hand comment about the horse being sick that only Emmett hears. I forget what illness he said. Emmett tells his father. Hoss gets mad because he thinks that Jesse deliberately tried to sell him a sick horse. Then Emmett gets back in the wagon and they leave.

On the VHS tape and the DVD, we see Hoss's wagon come up to the Cole's house. The two men talk for a couple of minutes, then Emmett climbs into the wagon. The point where Emmett climbs out of the wagon and the whole conversation about the horse is missing.

I guess it was so noticeable to me because the horse was so important to the two boys.

I'm going to try to email the production company that made the VHS tape. No harm in trying.
