When I read that Andy Griffith was originally cast in the film, I assumed as Hugh Holmes. I think the series benefited greatly by Keith Carradine being cast instead. Carradine has a certain creepiness about him that I don't think Griffith could have pulled off as well given his past folksy roles.

Little Opie's dad, Andy Taylor as Foxy would have been too creepy for me to bear.
i think andy would've been great cast against type (think henry fonda in 'once upon a time in the west'), but don't know how they would've "de-aged" him sufficiently in the early scenes....and yes, keith carradine was good and creepy i thought.
shareAll these I have believed that it Andy that played Foxy the killer. I recall his name being attached to the movie. We even talked about the movie in school because it was being filmed just down the road. I had to be in the 6th or 7th grade. But I had all these many years thought it to be Andy as the serial killer. Now I'll have to watch it again.

shareI'm six years too late, but as a previous poster said, Andy Griffith had incredible range as an actor, far beyond his Sheriff Taylor role.
If you want to see him in a marvelously slimy role, check him out in "A Face in The Crowd", several years before The Andy Griffith Show.
