What Is The Point Of This Movie?

Okay, it's strange because I liked this film, but I couldn't really find a point to it. That is to say, no moral or underlying theme. AND it ends rather abruptly with the hero's death. So, is the point that life is a series of down notes until the final down note which is your own death?

Disagree with the other respondent who said that it's not sad (or at least that he/she didn't find it sad). It's incredibly sad. It's also a very funny movie. What's interesting is that you say that the life portrayed is a series of down notes...what about Garp's mother's success? What about Garp becoming a good writer? What about the family working out its problems? Maybe the point is that everyone dies, but what's important is the way you live while you're alive (Garp's mother says something like this to him early in the film). I don't think you can judge a life's worth just in terms of years. Ask whether the characters were happy. I think Garp was, his wife was, his mother was, and John Lithgow's character probably was, too, all of them despite the "down notes" you mention.

There are points about sexual identity, the "battle" of the sexes, and being happy in the middle of a crazy world.
