Brilliant, Just Brilliant! (Major Spoilers)

I was so stunned by this film. I don't know why I passed it by so many times in the video store without picking it up. This film also helped two great actress's get their career in film off to a phenomenal start. This was Glenn Close's first feature film, and it was Amanda Plumnmers third. The acting in this film was also exellent. Glenn Close gave a terrific performance. Robin Williams was also great. But the side characters really helped make this movie wonderful, John Lithgow, Mary Beth Hurt, and Swoosie Kurtz were great! The only thing I did not really understand was the whole thing with Pooh, what was her motive for shooting (possibly killing) Garp? The only thing I can come up with was that she was jealous of his relationship with her sister Cushie, but that seemed to simple to me. I never read the novel so if someone could shed light on that I would appreciate it.

in the book pooh was one of the women who cut off their tongues and garp had written a bunch of articles condemning it. i dont think this is mentioned in the movie but he had had a couple attempted assassinations as a result. you should read the book. the movie is so great but the book has a lot more to it.

In the book, Cushie dies at childbirth many, many years after she actually has sex with Garp. Pooh's somewhat mentally unstable and she brainwashes herself into believing that Garp had something to do with the death of her sister ("He f----- my sister to death!", quote) though she died at childbirth and from a different man. So after the encounter at Jenny's funeral, she decides to kill Garp, cuts her tongue and shoots him twice.

He dies in the gym. Never is a helicopter mentioned.

The book also tells you what happens to all characters "after Garp". Pooh leads a long life, is reinstituted back to society and dies shortly after her daughter discovers her mother's violent past.

I rally liked the book, but A Prayer for Owen Meany will always be my favorite. Is this film any good?
