Ending (spoilers)
Why did Garp get shot in the end by that woman? Is it explained in the book. And in the end you see a baby, does it mean he is reborn? Reincarnation?

shareRead the book... it's Pooh Percy, who thinks that her sister's (Cushy) death was some how directly related to Garp's existence.
I think the movie did a terrible job of adapting the book, it wouldn't make any sense to anyone who hasn't read the novel, and to me, for people who read the novel, it still doesn't make any sense.
Help us please,
After watching the movie for 2.5 hours the dvr stopped right when garp was being airlifted. He was just about to say somthing when it stopped.
Please tell me what he said to his wife and if there was anything after that.
thanks in advance.
haha I had the exact same problem and thought to look here for answers also. Stupid DVR and off-set recording times.
Yeah so what did he say and he did die didn't he? I would assume he died but hey you never can tell for certain.
What he says is a reference to earlier in the movie when he would turn the car off and coast down the road making it feel like flying. Right before the crash that kills the younger son, the older son says: "Come on dad, make it fly, we wanna fly."
End scene
Garp: Helen
Helen: Yes, my love.
(Garp looks out the helicopter window.)
Garp: I'm flying Helen.
Helen: Yes, my love.
Garp: I'm flying... (and then something like "tra la da da da")
(She leans over to hug him and the camera pulls back to watch the helicopter fly off.)
There seemed to be a whole theme of flying throughout the movie. When he was a baby being tossed in the air. When he was a little boy with the animated drawings and on the roof. When the plane crashes into the house. When he would coast the car into their driveway. And to be taken away by helicopter at the end.
Thanks for the help. We realy enjoyed the movie and should have seen that coming but I dont think we would have guesse.
shareIt has to do with Garp's father, who was a pilot or something in the army. That's why Garp always was obsessed with flying. :)
shareThere is also the exchange, which i think is the closing dialogue - before the camera pulls back:
Garp: Remember, Helen."
Helen: "yes, my Love?"
Garp: "Everything."
I just watched the movie. I don't remember Cushie dying. When did this happen? Or was it left out of the movie?
shareTo joeware, they do leave Cushie's death out of the film. She dies, if I remember correctly, giving birth. Pooh blamed Garp in a misdirected way. It wasn't his baby, but throughout the book (and film to some extent) you get the impression that Pooh is really off balance.
shareImmediately after the helicopter flies vertically out of the frame, we see a giant baby levitate towards the rescue craft. The baby is huge! It is obvious that the baby is not an Ellen Jamesian, as it clearly has a tongue. We are to assume that this Godzilla-creature will foil the hospital trip and Garp will die!
This is evidently Roberta's first child, as its hands are quite large, and we learn earlier in the flick that Roberta has football-player hands.

Just an interesting tidbit.....
My Cousin, was the helicopter pilot for this film, and he said that RW was one of the funniest, pleasant people he has ever had the opportunity to work with.
