The Ending

Just finished watching it. OK...lots happens actually. As you said, Garp's son Walt dies in the car accident. The other son, Duncan, survives but loses his right eye (he sports an eyepatch, and talks about what kinds of glass eyes he wants). Garp has his mouth clamped shut and can't talk for a while, until his tongue can heal. Naturally, he is still very angry at Helen for her affair, and she in turn feels terrible about it and harbours some frustration. In case you're wondering, Michael (the student receiving fellatio at the time of the crash) gets his dick bitten off during the accident.

Garp decides to write a book denouncing the EllenJamesians, against the advice of his publisher, who claims it'll anger a lot of people. Then during an assembly during which she supports a candidate for mayor, Jenny is assassinated by a sniper. The ensuing funeral is supposed to be strictly feminist, but Garp obviously wants to be present, and shows up, only to be discovered and swamped by a mob of women. Roberta (the transvestite) fends them off and Garp escapes with a feminist that turns out to be Ellen James, who silently thanks him for writing the book, since she was also opposed to what the EllenJamesians were doing.

Finally, Garp returns to his school to coach the wrestling team. During a practice, a woman steps up to him and shoots him a few times in the chest, and he is rushed to a hospital in a helicopter with his wife. He seems pretty stable physically as they fly off, but I'm not sure myself if he dies afterwards or not.
