Does this movie take place in the present, or in the past? I'm aware his childhood scenes take place in the past, but does the adult part of the movie take place from the 60's to the 80's? Or from the 50's to the 70's?

I haven't read the book, but I want to.

Neither the book nor the movie consciously calls out the years as time passes, but Garp is born in 1944 and lives to be 33, so the movie largely takes place been the 50s (with Garp as a young boy) and the late 70s when he's an adult.
