The most twisted horror ever? Spoilers Within
I've watched a LOT of movies through my life. I can predict what will happen next in a scene based on how they set up a shot, which I'm sure a lot of filmgoers can do: You see a wide angle shot of a hallway with glass windows in a zombie movie, you know somethings gonna smash through the glass. That sort of thing.
This film was LOADED with very tense moments in totally mundane situations. Like when Garp is driving with the lights off, all the external shots of the car are exactly the sorts of shots they use right before a stunt/crash. So the whole time you're expecting something to happen. This happens THROUGHOUT.
I think its totally intentional. Someone like Pooh was designed to be an actual manifestation of these bad things. She just shows up and RUINS lives. Another situation that was like that was when they were coming back from the beach and talking about the undertoad, and Garp gets the younger son to climb into the front. That whole scene I was waiting for them to smash into something. Hell, even AT the beach when the younger son is standing in the water, and the shots are just barely long enough to make you think something is going to happen.
Not only that, but so so many horrifying things happen! Death all over the place, serious rape themes as core events, cockbiting, losing children...its one of the freakiest films I can think of!
All I'm saying is that they seem to have very deliberately made an extremely suspenseful and dread-filled movie, as long as you know how to look at it.
And the video store I work at has it labelled under...comedy. There is no genre that this film fits into, but its certainly not comedy.
