I read the book.....

The book was fantastic. Do I want to see the movie??

reply

Yes, I think you would enjoy the movie. Robin Williams, Mary Beth Hurt, Glenn Close, and John Lithgow are all very good in the movie. Just go into it aware that the movie is never just like the book, and the characters will not be the same as the image you already created in your mind.

I saw the movie years before I got around to reading the book. I went to see it with my then gf, who had read the book and loved it. Afterwards I asked her how it compared to the book. She said that they had changed quite a bit, but it retained the spirit of the book. After reading the book myself, I have to say that was a good assessment. I quite enjoyed them both.

See the movie to say that you've seen the movie. I love the book...read it when it first came out. My best friend took me to see the movie for my 18th birthday... I was disappointed then, but have grown to love it over the years. Still, I would have rather seen it sticking closer to the book. I found all the attention to flying a terrible distraction. And going to NY instead of Europe was a big mistake. But whenever I see the movie playing, I have to re-read the book!

The book is much richer. I read it before the movie and did not have any actors in mind because I read it before they planned on who was going to be in it. There are many scenes that I wished were included. Spoilers for the book ahead:

The scene with the child molester and Garp catching him.
Going to Vienna instead of New York City.
Jenny getting attacked by a soldier in the beginning.

The movie had some differences, but all in all the movie followed the book as closely as it could. Most of the changes were minor and seemed to be for the benefit of time.
