Good quality DVD is available.

I got tired of waiting for an official release of this, and decided it would never happen, and I bought two Asian DVDs of it from ebay last month. They are surprisingly good quality and uncut versions from what I can tell, made in Asia from a European source that could possibly be a high quality PAL video source, likely British since there are no subtitles, and one that was converted to DVD with care. They have a white cover with the eyes of the dog peering out, and the title WHITE DOG, and underneath are three chinese symbols meaning "white colored dog", and in the bottom right corner in English, "trained to kill". They are full-screen format but they are of much better quality than I expected, no color fading like in 16mm print copies, and played on any of my DVD machines including the older ones. Do not purchase the DVDs with subtitles, they are not of as good a quality as this one is. You also may see a DVD like this without the three chinese symbols, which are duplicates of this DVD and the symbols were removed from the artwork, do not know if they are good or not.

Yeah, I have the same DVD. The disk is really shiny eh? I though the quality was great concidering the original prob is not much better. I was just happy to see NO subtitles like the other one I bought no knowing.

how about you rip the copy you have and distribute it in teh intarnets? lol

reply

The white dog used in the movie is also a white German shephard, and quite beautiful. But it's trained to rip apart black people, so i hope your dog is nicer..

That link probably explians why it's unavailable in the USA. I've seen the film twice on UK telly, both times it was screened after midnight though. I was taken aback at the brilliance of the film on first viewing, and totally mystified why such a great film had been scheduled so late on at night!? Just afer midnight was usually a Hammer Horror film time slot, not serious drama such as this.

Anyways, I loved the film. Found it upsetting but not exploitative of the subject matter, and certainly not racist, in fact it highlights racism in a way everyone can understand, that's the whole point of the film! Most people love dogs, and to see an animal used as a weapon of racism in such a way is abhorent, but it happens and it's no fault of the Dogs, it's just been conditioned that way, much like 'ignorant' racists who rarely (if ever) even encounter people of another colour. Their racism stems from their upbringing (And TV also if you ask me!) rather than encounters with other races :( Maybe that's EXACTLY why American distributers wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, to close to the knuckle I bet!

maybe criterion could release it.

The store you mentioned online is now closed.

It looks like Criterion is going to be releasing this, hopefully sometime this year.
