That final aerial shot...

*********WARNING: SPOILER***************

Am I the only one who thought that last shot of that poor dog lying in the cage was completely heart-wrenching?? All I could think about was what a sad life that poor dog had in the hands of the films' real beast: man. Accompanied by that haunting music score, one cannot help but get choked up at the sadness of it all. Despite a few minor quips, WHITE DOG is a powerful, thoughtful, and brilliant film, not only about the damaging effects of racism but also (and equally affecting) the terrible effects of animal cruelty.

Agree with you completely. The dog's tragedy is what I connected to throughout the film; his fear and confusion. That final shot - a beautiful, white furred dog dead in the dirt - was gut wrenching.

The Criterion DVD actually has that last shot on the cover of the booklet. I think they should have put that on the cover totally, but would have spoiled it.
