Anyone?
I'm an Andrews fan. Has anyone seen this?
shareI'm suprised you're the 1st to post here.
shareI was too. Julie Andrews seems to have quite a large and assorted fan base. Any comments on the movie? Is it worth watching, and is her performance in it as bad as on the imdb commentary?
shareA FABULOUS MOVIE. I saw it when it came out to theaters and it was so amazing. I mean, Preston is a stunner in anything, and Julie was just great. This movie makes me laugh a lot. It is in my top 6 movies of all time. (I only have found 6 movies that I consider to be worthy of the list, otherwise I would have a top 10 list!) Every character is so full of melodrama, and right on target. (Well, except Lesley Ann Warren's character is a bit grating, but she's supposed to be.)
Rent it, buy it, whatever, and enjoy it.

Thunderbirds Aren't Slow
I LOVE THIS FILM...I BELIEVED THAT SHE MANAGED TO PULL OFF A MAN
Yes, I saw the Broadway version the night they filmed it (and now I have that DVD, too!), and Julie was amazing! If you haven't seen it, you should, although the Broadway version is different than the movie.
There are some great new songs, like "Paris Makes Me Horny," and some great bits, like a tango between Victor and Norma.
The one bit that would have been great in the movie was Norma's dance hall performance of "Chicago Illinois" in which she tries to copy the multi-octave vocal scale from "Le Jazz Hot" but she can't do it justice -- priceless!
In the Broadway DVD comentary, Julie and Blake mention that they wished they would have thought of it for the movie version, because it was such a hit in the live show.
Victor/Victoria is definitely one of my top ten movies of all time...
I am originally from Sandusky, Ohio, and once there was a traveling performance at the Sandusky State Theater of Victor/Victoria. I can't exactly say I saw it, because I was working behind the scenes on the crew, but I can say with certainty that no one, but no one, holds a candle to Robert Preston as Toddy. Nobody can sing like Julie, either!
"My life is a package tour. I am merely a passenger."
I love this movie and I am a big Julie Andrews fan, have been ever since I saw her in MARY POPPINS when I was a kid. This film is well worth watching and not just because of Andrews. It is a well-written and superbly performed musical comedy that works on all levels. As for Andrews' performance, I will say Blake Edwards knows how to make his wife look good. Andrews does solid work here though I honestly never buy for a moment that she is a man or that anyone would mistake her for a man. I think the Best Actress nomination she received for this film she received because she's Julie Andrews. Robert Preston is brilliant as Toddy and should have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and Lesley Ann Warren steals every scene she is in as Norma Cassidy, King Marchand's ditzy moll who's jealous of King's attraction to Victoria. Yes, this film is definitely worth seeing for a multitude of reasons.
shareWatch it, its a fantastic film. Julie Andrews is wonderful in it!
:)
~~I LOVE TULAM~~
Must agree; it's lovely.
It's just the right sort of film to put on when you're doing the ironing. It demands nothing more of you than you roll along with the comedy of it, and marvel at Ms Andrews vocal gymnastics. Her songs are stunning!
True, it does lose pace with the standard "hotel corridor / in and out of each other's rooms" bit. But the finale more than makes up for this. Yes, it's well worth getting a cheap copy, 'cos you'll want to watch it again.

Thank you so much for singling out Preston's performance in this film...I thought he was just brilliant and should have won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that went to Louis Gossett Jr. for AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN.
shareI would (and i have) buy this for Le Jazz Hot alone, i am absolutley in love with this song, i have even appeared in Drag on stage performing it lol (have i just shared too much now???? lol)
shareAh, but did you appear on stage performing as a woman playing a man playing a woman, or maybe a man playing a woman playing a man playing a woman...hmm...I think I just confused myself.... ;)
It is indeed a kick butt movie, and is on my top ten list, it's true, Andrews doesn't pass well as a man, but *shrugs* she more than makes up for it by acting her socks off and her singing...*swoon* :-D
I too have always loved this film. True Julie does not pass well for a man but who cares. My God can that women sing and she's not a bad actor either
:-) As for Robert Preston. What a truly gifted actor. I for awhile after I saw it assumed he was gay. He pulls it off with just the right amount of camp and sincerity and the fact that I now know men like him just makes it even more believable. And the two together have such great chemistry.
So yes you should, if you have not by now, see it. Highly recommended and is one of my favorites.

Le Jazz Hot is right up there in my top three musical numbers of all time. In addition to Julie's awesome pipes and timing there's the energetic and ultra-precise choreography, especially the girls in top hats. This may sound weird, but the precision of that number is so well arranged that it brings tears to my eyes, like I'm watching one of those polished musicals from the 50's! I wish, wish, wish I had seen this on the big screen.
But the movie itself is also so wonderful. Some say it contains too much Blake Edwards trademark slapstick. I think that just adds to the fun. Rent, buy, enjoy, and treasure!
"She's got huge...tracts o' land!"
An absolute wonderful movie!!!!!!
I can't stop watching it at the moment- I got a new TV at christmas and so I can watch my Juliie Andrews DVDs, it's wonderful!
*HRH The Princess Of All Things Nice*.
Wonderful performance! Recently viewed V/V on HBO and I seem to remember that in 1982 Julie "exposes" her ruse in a topless scene which either was later edited out (and never mentioned in reviews) or I'm confusing this with another film. Anybody help?

Julie went topless in S.O.B. according to this write-up: http://www.julieandrews.co.uk/article_sob_main.htm
I myself have not seen it.
I loved Julie's vocals on "Le Jazz Hot" that slide up the scale she does at the end of the song is just dazzling; however, I must disagree regarding the choreography...very unimaginative in my opinion.
share~~stephen9478~~ - yes, you have shared a little too much now lol. but im am in love with that song too; i love julie andrews and was just downloading random songs of hers (yes, i have a life) when i came across this song. i bought the movie basically because i loved le jazz hot, and people i asked said it was a good movie

A wonderful, wonderful film. I just got it on DVD (It's VERY hard to find 'round here) and completely fell in love with it.
I've never been Julie Andrews fan. Don't get me wrong; she's a superb actress and a brilliant singer. She's very pretty, very classy and in all ways unique. It's just that I was never wont to go 'Julie Andrews! swoon and run out and buy everything of hers.
This movie pretty much changed my mind though. Unlike 'Mary Poppins' and 'Sound of Music' (gag) this is not a Julie Andrews vehicle. She is of course the star and it wouldn't be what it is without her, nevertheless she is a contributor to the film, one of many, it's not strictly her film. I'd like to gush over some of the stars, if I may. :)
In praise of Julie Andrews
Just because I say I'm not a true fan doesn't mean I'm not utterly in awe of this woman. First; she's easily the most talented stage performer to hit the screen in the past fifty years. I mean, she was performing IIRC actively from the age of 4. Her voice is lovely; her singing skills prodigious, with a huge range and power. In looks; while I wouldn't rate her as particularly gorgeous she is still quite beautiful and even today in her 60's retains a great deal of her looks. (See pictures of her and Blake Edwards together. She looks stunning; he looks like death and they're pretty close in age. heh heh) In this movie; we see why she's so great as well; for she really gets to enjoy herself performing. That's why Le Jazz Hot is such a great song - look at the way her eyes light right up as she starts singing; she's having a ball. Just before that fantastic glissando at the end of the song, look at the expression on her face, you can practically see her thinking 'OK, here we go!!!' Also this film came at just the right time, I think, she's somewhere in her early 40's, right at her prime. Phenomenal acting too - while we simply can't see her as a man (she's just too feminine for that) we're not supposed to - the audience is in on her secret. She pulls it off very well, I thought.
Above all; whatever she is doing Julie is pure class. She has that regal British bearing and poise few - if any - actresses have nowadays; that part at the end where she enters as a woman in the black gown is memorable - she looks like a queen entering her court. A wonderful actress.
In praise of Robert Preston
This guy I am a fan of; I love everything he does. Preston is terrific - superb acting, great talent, a great look. People always say he gets the great lines, that's not true. He makes the lines great. (Norma: "I just love Frenchmen!" Toddy: "Ahhh, so do I!") Look at that line - nothing really. Now hear him say it, and it's hilarious. Damn, what a voice too. There really is to my mind nothing better than a great actor who refuses to take himself seriously. Skill is one thing; but when an actor stops being 'the star' and just has fun; that's when real magic happens - Preston had loads of fun no matter what he was doing. From the commentary; I learned that his last lampoon of Shady Lady was done in a singe take - and with very little rehearsal. Blake Edwards just put the camera on him and let him go. His laughter after the song and his comments are entirely natuiral; nothing was in the script, we're seeing Robert Preston as he was; not as his character was. A fitting tribute and memorial I think.
In praise of Lesley-Anee Warren
Oh boy. Quick - what's the first thing you think about when you think about this film? For a large number; I'm willing to bet it's "Twendy twavellers tend to twalk...." Warren absolutely stole this show. She's every bit as skilled and almost as classy as Julie Andrews. Perhaps not as much raw talent and vocal ability; but still a helluva lot. Unlike Julie; she's also drop-dead gorgeous with a body hot enough to melt lead. She can also do the one thing Julie can't: act like a floozy. That is I think the one thing that Julie cannot do; act below her station, she's just too classy to pull it off. Hell, look at SOB - Ok, in the film she gets high in order to work up the guts to go topless but even in that scene she's got class - she simply can't lower herself enough to play a Norma character. Lesley-Anne can. Gawd was she funny in this film - loud, grating, irritating, dumb, cheesy, campy and still utterly endearing and loveable. That moment when she's trying - totally unsuccessfully - to convince King that it's OK to be 'impudent' is simply one of the funniest monologues ever filmed. Her scene with Robert Preston ("You're weally a kwee-ah?") is equally great. It's practically impossible to not fall in love with her; she's utterly delightful.
In short (too late); this movie had everything. Incredible performances, incredible writing. Wonderful sets, lighting and of course Henry Mancini. There was simply no way to make it better than it was and thanks to the DVD it has and will lose none of its style and flash over time. In a world nowadays where 'comedy' is things like Jack Black and South Park; this is a classy, thoughtful, heartwarming masterpiece.
Cheers!
