lack of chemistry

I think that what kills the movie is that the "love story" in just not believable...King and Victoria are not an appealing couple, there is no chemistry between then and if you feel moved by her, as a talented unlucky singer, you kind of despise this rather disturbing gangster from the beginning. You wouldn’t want him to date any of your relatives, if you know what I mean....I just think that the real couple in this story should be (is) Toddy and Victoria. They are really funny, musical and come from the same desperate rock bottom that make the viewer really sympathetic towards them.

I couldn't disagree more. I think Andrews and Garner have tremendous chemistry.

Barbara Wynne:We must go,darling,we have the Bishop for lunch.
Clive Candy:I hope he's tender.

i agree w/ mrsphoenix. i love this movie and it's due to the chemistry of all the actors.. 5 stars all the way!

I completely agree. I think all the actors have terrific chemistry in this, one of my favourite ever movies. I would go as far to say that Andrews has the best chemistry she has ever shown with both James and Robert.

I agree that the chemistry between Julie Andrews and Robert Preston was simply fantastic. But Julie and James Garner as a couple worked fine for me. Never thought about complaining about that.

You may feel that the characters of King and Victoria are not an appealing couple (although I don't agree), but there's simply no denying the great chemistry between James Garner and Julie Andrews in this film. They practically sizzle on screen together!

I turned 'Stranger' into 'Starman' in the Sunday New York Times.

Agreed.

I understand what you're saying about the character of King Marchand and that, in a way, you want someone a little better for Victoria, but completely disagree about the chemistry between Andrews and Garner...I think they have an amazing onscreen chemisry together, evidenced in the two theatrical films they did together and the one TV-movie.

Hmm, I love Julie Andrews, and I liked this movie, but I hate to have to agree with the OP. I didn't really feel it from both of them. I might have to watch it again, but I didn't see the chemistry. I know it was stupid, but I actually thought Julie and her friend were going to hook up. Really stupid idea, since I knew he was gay, but still...I just thought he was cooler than King Marchand.

I haven't changed, but I know I'm not the same.

Try seeing "The Americanization of Emily." It was a treat to see Andrews and Garner paired again 18 years later in V/V.
