Tron (1982) or Lifeforce (1985)?
Which "cult classic" is better?
shareWhile I loved Tron when it came out when I was a kid, that naked lady alone at the beginning of Lifeforce when I was a teenager unfairly tips the scales.
shareLifeforce is a cool movie, but Tron is by far the better movie. Lifeforce is cool because it is so ridiculous, silly, and over the top. Tron is good because it actually has a coherent story, innovative effects for the time, and decent to good acting. Lifeforce has interesting Dykstra effects and beautiful Mathilda May, but it is a silly mess of a story, inconsistent at every turn, and full of terrible acting, as well as a weird score that doesn't fit the movie. Plus, it is the only movie I have ever seen with something as hilarious as Patrick Stewart laying there with this intent look on his face while Steve Railback struggles not to kiss him!

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
I never considered Lifeforce a cult classic, but to answer the question...
For a kid of the 80's, how can you not LOVE Tron? While the SFX viewed with today's eyes are cheesy at best, at the time, they were Avatar-esque. The story was simple, and it led to easily adapted "toys" for the boys to play with.
Lifeforce, while having full-frontal nudity (what 10-year-old boy did not LOVE that chick walking down the stairs?) and decent gore, did not translate to wild imaginations the way Tron did. Also, this was not a movie that attentive parents would have let their kids see.
I was obviously a kid of the late 70's / 80's, so I look at Tron as the "better" movie in that regard.
However, looking at both movies with my adult, 2011 eyes, I would have to say Lifeforce was better. Come on, Captain Jean Luc Picard was in it!!!!
I would NEVER compare the two, though. Too apples and oranges for a comparison.
If you're into a chick thats pretty hairy down there and has breasts that are so amazing they look fake, by all means Lifeforce. Other than that Lifeforce is a really strange movie, but rather inventive.
For once a movie that isn't set in Los Angeles or New York.
I like both films, but I don't think you can compare them. They are so very different.
Whereas Tron is more sci-fi/adventure Lifeforce is more supernatural thriller.
Both films have their problems. However, if you like popcorn flicks and can get past some of the silliness in these two films, then they are both definitely worth viewing.

TRON is by far better than Lifeforce.
Lifeforce came off looking like a low-budget and incomplete film, despite its budget, whereas TRON looked more expensive than the allotted budget and actually broke new VFX ground. Lifeforce looks like a cheap version of the numerous creature-effects films that were on the scene years before it.
