I always assumed since his character was a starving actor, it was a sort of a way to curb his hunger cravings.

I have seen where this is a symptom of people self-medicating for diabetes. They don't know it, but they are drawn to lemons and limes, pickles, cocktail olives: anything with a high acid content, vinegar too.

A bad habit, the acid rots your teeth more than sugar.
