Nobody bothers checking her background?

So here we have this huge celebrity and yet, nobody bothers to ask her about her childhood and education? Nobody wonders what other acting credits she had? Where she studied acting? Nobody from the movie business wonders how she popped up out of nowhere with no references? Still, being a comedy, it can get away with it and still be an enjoyable movie.

But she does have a reference, at least. Dorothy says, "I don't have a resume, but George Fields is my agent." Then, the very next thing that Dorothy does is to go find George Fields at the Russian Tea Room to make sure that he knows who "Dorothy Michaels" is when the producers of "Southwest General" call to verify that Dorothy really is his client. This way, George (who clearly has a great reputation as an agent) will vouch for Dorothy and the show's producers will be satisfied with that.

He probably made up some stuff from his own past and adapted it for Dorothy's resume.

Actually, the thing that has always bugged me is that Michael has no legal identification as Dorothy (driver's license, Social Security card, etc.). How do they hire Dorothy for the soap opera without documentation?

reply

Forging ids and paperwork. They do it for many movies.

So why wasn't he arrested, if he committed a felony so clear and evident to millions of people in America?

"You keep him in here, and make sure HE doesn't leave!"

reply

As a working "actress" Dorothy would need a SAG card to get a job. But her card had the name of Michael Dorsey on it. ha ha

Well, it was a day-time soap-opera, which has, traditionally, even at their most popular, mostly been followed by middle-aged housewifes. They have never been bastions of star-making. While the movie treats it like the big-times, I think it is firmly tongue in cheek, since the show is presented as written by hacks, acted by hams and produced by half-wits.

This was in the early 80s, way before the age of the internet and instant fact checking. Heck, even today there are fake news sites and fake bios on Wikipedia.
