much better than the overrated DEEP RED

BETTER story, better music, better ending, better .

reply

I agree it's better, but I wouldn't call DEEP RED over-rated. I think the two films make a great double bill with their contrasting views of Italy, one old-fashioned, the other modern.

reply

Modern? Tenebrae was made 26 years ago!

reply

I'm assuming that poster means that Deep Red was set in a very classical version of Rome, the places that tourists would visit, while Tenebre took place mostly in the suburbs.

Oh, no, I'm not tired. But my finger is!

reply

Tenebre was supposed to take place in the future after some crisis that reduced the population. I'm not kidding, that was Dario's intention.

reply

I prefer DEEP RED

reply

Aye...It's his best movie (by a country mile)
'Suspiria' is probably most guilty of being Argento's most overrated movie (not 'Deep Red') and I love 'Suspiria' (btw)

reply

It was better in every respect. As a bonus, the plot actually made complete sense this time, and the twists were interesting, wheras in Deep red they were completely random and made no sense.

"No man is just a number"

reply

I think that neither Deep Red nor Tenebrae have stood the test of time. Both films feel extremely dated now, unlike say de Palma's Carrie from very roughly the same period. I still love Suspiria though, and The Bird With Crystal Plumage.

reply

And I DO know that Tenebrae is a few years more recent than Carrie. But you know what I mean.

reply

I disagree, I think Carrie has aged even more than Tenebre and Deep Red but I still love all three films.

I prefer Deep Red to Tenebre though.

reply

Whatever about Carrie, I think that Tenebrae and Deep Red are extremely dated scary movies. Having said that, I loved Tenebrae when I first saw it many years ago. But in the meantime, horror movies have become far more 'sophisticated' in my opinion. I found Funny Games tremendous, and Them was terrific too. Wind Chill and The Mist were very good as well. I know they're nothing like Argento movies, but in a way that's my point. At the end of the day everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and no offence.

reply

We all have our own views on things, that's what makes us unique. I am curious though that you think modern horror movies are more sophisticated. How so? In terms of special effects yeah definitely. But when it comes to ideas, symbolism and cinematography I think Argento has yet to be beaten.

Only directors like Zulawski, David Lynch and Cronenberg have really pushed the boundaries when it comes to horror in terms of imagination and technique. John Carpenter had the imagination too.

reply

When I said 'sophisticated' I meant in terms of plot, script, acting, etc. Although I used to love Argento many years ago, I think his movies have dated nearly as badly as British Carry-On films. Granted, he was great with colours and textures, but the plots of his films are often stupid and incoherent. When it comes right down to it if you go back to 1970's Argento, he's competing with The Exorcist, The Omen, etc. I won't be persuaded that anything Argento has done is better than these, or even Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Now THAT was a movie with ideas, and even earlier than the Argento movies I've mentioned. But each to his/her own. It's what makes life (and IMDB) interesting. But sorry, Dario. This just isn't working for ME anymore.

reply

You make a valid argument and I see where you are coming from.

Compared to other classic horror films from the period 60's-70's like the Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead etc. Argento's films may pale in comparison depending on the viewer.

I think his films are better than alot of the tosh we see at the cinema today though. His classics like Suspiria, Deep Red etc may be flawed in terms of the poor acting, shoddy plot and other elements but at least he tried to be different and he had some imagination. I give more respect to a director who tries to innovate even if he falls flat on his face in the process.

reply

Totally agree with that assessment. I won't be dumping Argento in favour of Eli Roth any time soon!

reply

Firstly I don't agree with the whole "it's aged" thing...

a great film is a great film forever... are you now saying you can't appreciate this anymore because of the lightening fast mtv style way films are shot today (mainly to mask the storyless dross most of 'em are)...

if you are, i find it hard to believe you enjoyed Argento in the firstplace.

Secondly, I don't agree at all, I think Deep Red/Profondo Rosso is superior to Tenebre in every way... it's better crafted, the sets are beautiful and terrifying at the same time, the music's better, Deep Red truly rewards the viewer after investing the attention and patience it thoroughly deserves... it is in-short the ultimate giallo.

Whilst i'm sorry but Tenebre is nothing but a pretty ordinary slasher flick masquerading as a giallo... it's not a clever movie... "ooh... it's all because of sex"... well there's a surprise i never saw that one coming... cough, cough... and the twist itself is actually pretty redundant and unnecassary... just an excuse for more murders

I actually akin Tenebre more to something like The New York ripper, than Argento's previous work.

Oh, and one more thing... how can someone claim that Deep Red has dated but crystal Plummage hasn't... TBWTCP is IMO horribly over-rated along with tenebre... The cat o' nine tails and four flies on grey velvet are both better movies.

reply

Tenebrae a great film? You mean it finds itself on lists of all-time great movies, along with Bicycle Thieves, Citizen Kane, etc? Why am I thinking no? And why the surprise that I used to like Argento movies? People change, and so do their tastes. That's life.

reply

If you actually bothered to read all of what I wrote, you'll find that I DO NOT think Tenebre is a great film by any stretch of the imagination, far from it...

and in your original post you didn't mention anything about citizen cane or "greatest movie of all time" lists... you were implying that because Tenebre/Deep red etc are all 20/30+ years old that you didn't like them as much today as you did then...

and on the subject how olds citizen blummin cane! when it's at home...

reply

Tenebre, way better then Deep Red.

I had to turn off Deep Red after he searches the house cause I was falling alseep...watched it later, the ending made up for it, but it was too slow paced for me.

reply

As much as I love Tenebre, I find Deep Red a far superior film in many ways, although I do agree the ending and the music in Tenebre is better. But Deep Red has better acting, better story, better twist, better visuals, etc and plus it´s probably the scariest Argento film after Suspiria.

reply

have to disagree on this one

reply

I thought both films were masterpieces and they both hsould get higher ratings,8 at least

Dario Argento is like oxygen,he is a reason for me to live

reply

Deep Red is considerably better IMO. Tenebre is a good movie, but Deep Red has a way cooler plot, better atmosphere (terrifying, in fact), and an unbelievably cool ending.

Deep Red has a lot of parts that are unbelievably scary, and nothing really happens. It's just so atmospheric that some otherwise simple scenes become very scary. Such as the part when he's breaking away the wall to find the picture. With the music and lighting, that simple scene becomes terrifying.

I like it better than Deep Red as well.
