Hey, I totally agree. I just got done watching the film again. It holds up real well. Admittedly, the effects pale beside the current crop of films that utilize CGI and the make-up is a far cry from the quality of a Rick Baker, Tom Savini or Dick Miller. However, what the film has is a lot of heart. Adrienne Barbeau is great fun and she looks fantastic. This was the film where I was introduced to the great Ray Wise as Alec Holland, perhaps his only real role where he played a decent guy. Another thing I really find impressive about the movie is that Wes Craven was attempting to adapt the comic book aesthetic with his editing techniques. Notice the use of wipes throughout the film, mimicking the panels of a comic. Plus, it does push the boundaries pretty hard for a "PG" rated film. This is far from the "worst comic book movie."
Indeed, one need only look at Lexi Alexander's Punisher: War Zone for that. This film is campy and low budget, but still light years better than Superman IV, Supergirl, Albert Pyun's Captain America, or Batman & Robin.
I really hate this movie. Once you get past the first act, there's nothing about this story that distinguishes it from any other cheesy early 80s crap. It just an excuse for chase scenes, fist fights, tit shots and 2D characters. Obviously Adrienne Barbeau is a good actress, but the Jude character is the only real standout.
I think this movie falls way below the source material. I remember reading the "Swamp Thing" comic book as a child and it was much more effective than this adaptation. Those rubber costumes were the worse ever. I'm usually against remakes but in this case, I think a re-make is in order.
