The fact that Wes Craven was linked to this project I think officially ties him to the genius level of Clive Barker, inventor behind the imaginative Hellraiser film series.
A normal guy has contact with a sensitive chemical which turns him into a creepy monster seeking some sort of sentimental retribution.
What is it about revenge that makes us feel straight?
