Savvik Kirk elevator scene (alternate take)

shot this way its almost a potential romance between Savvik and Kirk!

The power of good editing and good filmmaking!

It's almost the exact same scene as the scene that ended up in the movie, and yet, it doesn't work as well.

The director and the editor made the good choice for choosing the wide shot.

Kirk's gonna need a trip to hollodeck 4 after that close encounter with Savvik. Hot!

Did I hear right? Did Kirk address Kirstie Alley's character as MISTER Saavik?

reply

Yes. It was a holdover in the script. originally, Saavik was to be male and had a male Vulcan name (starting with "S", whereas female names are like "T'pau" or "T'Pring"). When they cast the role, apparently the name wasn't updated.

I like the idea, a single pronoun to refer to everyone, neatly sidesteps the issue of greater or fewer genders for other species - how do you refer to a species without gender? How do you refer to a species with 3 or more genders?

reply

Yeah, the "Mister" never bothered me as much as the male Vulcan name.

I seem to remember Spock referring to Uhura as Miss Uhura on a few occasions in TOS.
