i have the dvd - with david bowie, but who originally did it?

No one. It never had anyone presenting it

not true, on the TV version there is no one presenting it but on the video & dvd there is David Bowie who was asked to be involved.

The original intro has Raymond Briggs (the author) walking along a country lane. He is saying almost exactly the same words that David Bowie's does and as he finishes the picture fades from the real world into the animated one. It really is quite special and I hope that you get to see it one day.
