Niceee.
The only other person that I know that remember this movie is my older sister. I remember my dad bringing the VHS home one day, and we watched it every morning one entire summer.
I honestly forget everything that happens in the movie, (with the exception of ice skating and many snow ppl) but my sister said she remember crying when he melted...
Wonder if I could find that DVD and soundtrack...

I don't know if there is an official soundtrack, but you can find piano versions of the songs "Walking in the Air," "Building the Snowman" and "The Snowman's Music Box Dance" on George Winston's album "Forest." Cute story--I watched "The Snowman" when I was six or so, but forgot about it for a long time. Then my high school art teacher put on this CD in class one day, and I immediately recognized it after 10 years.
shareWhere can I order the DVD (American format) - or if necessary, the VHS of this film? I can not find it. Thanks
shareYou can get The Snowman on Region 1 DVD from Amazon or PlayUSA.com, both are a combined feature with Father Christmas, apprently, they have an American voicing the Father Christmas cartoon as opposed to Mel Smith on the original..
shareYou can find a great rendition of the song that is very close to the one sung by the boys choir in the cartoon on a CD called "Celtic Woman." It is sung by Chloe, a 15-year old Irish folk singer, who is becoming famous for her fabulous voice at such a young age. Check it out!
shareI saw it yesterday for the first time of my life! I've heard different versions of the song "walking in the air" many times, but never actually seen the movie. I literally cried my eyes out! At least out of mascara..I didn't know it would be this sad :( I even cried last night when I listened "Walking in the air" and I'm almost 18...some things just touches you too deeply :l

An especially good version is the one by Nightwish, anyone ever hear it? If you haven't I highly recommend you try it-- it's kind of metal-y but very melancholy and very haunting, much like the original.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
I've been watching it since my first Christmas, except for the past 3 . . which makes me sad . . We have it on tape, but I don't know where it is . . I really love it, we used to sing "Walking In the Air" all the time . .

I watched it a few days ago. I last saw it maybe in 91. I did cry quite a bit at the end. It is a very touching piece of animation. I would think anyone who still has their inner child or has not been jaded by the world, would at least feel something from it. I actually just bought a stuffed Snowman on Ebay. I intend to buy the DVD soon, as well.

I intend to buy the DVD as well. Maybe then I can see the entire film! :)
I awoke one morning to this movie on, and I loved the second half. But they never replayed it.
As for the film's bittersweet ending, Frosty the Snowman has a similar ending in the melting aspect.
I remember watching it with my young cousin, and when she cried at Frosty melting, I just explained to her that next winter he can come back good as new! She was relieved. :)
I understand that the DVD has another film on it as well? Anyone know anything about this other film?

i just got the celtic woman cd, and the walking in the air song is on it, and as soon as i heard it i was like OMG THIS WAS IN THE MOVIE ABOUT THE SNOWMAN WE USED TO WATCH IN KINDERGARTEN 1ST AND 2ND GRADEE
i havent seen it in like 3 yrs, since like 8th grade...sadnesssss but its such a cute movie
yeah,, my mom got "celtic woman" on dvd, and i was in the kitchen when i heard "walking in the air" and i'm going "whoa! i remember this! this is from that cartoon about the little boy and the snowman that fly! i love this song!" i'd practically forgotten about the movie, but it jogged my memory. i'd always wondered what the words to the song were..
it's just, so... beautiful.... it's bittersweet because you know it has to end, and you know the snowman has to melt, but it makes you so happy. especially if you have dreams about flying, like me. it just breaks one's heart, how it's so sad, like a parent looking at her child and saying, "you are so innocent, living with a view of simplicity that could end the world's problems, but soon you're going to grow up and lose it all, and never get it back."
just the music breaks your heart, the way it's played.... i hate to say it, but even the kareoke version gets the point across. why anyone would convert "walking in the air" into kareoke, i'll never know.
I think it's the saddest movie ever, mostly because there are no words, just beautiful music, and man that ending...I literally get chills and sometimes tear up just thinking about it. A true animated classic.
shareI feel like crying right now. "sniff" Excuse me.
"HOPSCOTCH!"
I have the CD (and the VHS and book) and it contain tracks with music with the spoken story and tracks with just the music.... and its both lovely! Truly a masterpiece.
shareWHY DOES RAYMOND BRIGGS ALWAYS MAKE ME CRY!!!!
I cried the first time I saw this when I was about four, then when I was 15 I found my parents had a copy of When the Wind Blows, which made me cry even more
Wild! I was absolutely Livid!
This is by far the best thing about christmas. Easily. I was a year old when it was first brought out, it has been with me all my life and I'm so glad Channel 4 have showed every single year without fail.
Its not the ending that makes me cry. Its the part where the boy is dancing around with all the worldwide snowmen! I just lose it everytime. It's FANTASTIC! I would kill for that piece of music, I can't find it anywhere
Snowman is genius

I also heard the song walking on the air again and remembered not watched that Snowman Movie in years. I remember I used to get upset. Such a heart warming lovely movie.
shareI'd recommend watching the "sequel" Father Christmas--also a great film. In the original British version, Father Christmas arrives at the Snowman dance and sees the boy and the Snowman again. He makes a great comment "Oh, I see you've made it again...and I'm not talking about here."
You won't hear that in the US version, but it did take a little bit of the sting out of the sad ending for me :)
