Hey kids, life is just gonna get tougher you know...

This film is amazing, but for myself (and many others around my age...i'm 28) it was the first inkling that you know what...Life isn't going to be a walk in the park (with jumpers for goalposts) all the time.

Even as a nipper, watching the end sequence as the camera pulls away from James (it's written on his scarf eagle eyed fans!) as he stand alone, his true friend that has just disappeared, never to return again, i started to think 'Okay, maybe those Disney films have lied to me. Life IS going to suck.'

Then i put on Watership Down and confirmed it.

Which is why it's amazing (as is Watership Down) as they don't talk down to children. They touch subjects like death, loss and rabbits caught in snare traps coughing up blood as the flies start to swarm sensing death looming...sorry, had a flashback there...!

Life sucks and I don't really think there is a God who loves us, otherwise why are we here on earth suffering physical and mental anguish?

I know just what you mean. But when I first watched it I didn't know what it felt like to lose a friend so it didn't really touch me. I've never seen another kids' film (save for Watership Down) that had tragedy in it. Now I'm older I understand it a bit more and it now makes me cry - how sad is that? That never hit me when I was a kid. ah I was so carefree...

reply

Yep, I always respected that - even as a kid. Tell it to me straight, don't give me the 'fluffy-bunny' version... (Bit difficult in Watership Down... ) Down with Disney!

I'm gonna take this itty-bitty site by storm... I'm just gettin' warm.

Funny old thing life is. Full of despair and hatred, yet also filled with love and hope.

TODAY'S DISNEY is the fault! Walt taught us life lessons, and Roy carried on for a while. However, they then decided that "Old Yeller" and "Bambi" were too much for children to handle! Now, we have many people who grew up as those "can't-handle-its", and they whine about the older films and won't let their children view anything that might say life isn't that proverbial bowl of cherries. Every student should NOT get a gold star or an award for participating! Every runner should NOT receive a trophy! Awarding students who are "almost on the honor roll" is ridiculous! That's what we've ended up with.

In the "old days", children were shown harsher aspects of life, and our parents were there for questions and conversation. We loved these films and revisited them. A good cry is always cathartic.

If you want to blame Disney, it's definitely not the one Baby Boomers grew up with! Have the courage and good sense to show your children the "golden oldies"!

There are others, too, including "The Yearling" and, of course, "The Snowman".

There is a God. Only thing is, God is not Santa Claus.
