Release this on DVD
This is Alan Parker's best film. It contains two of the most extraordinary performances by accomplished actors ever. It's insightful, intense, funny and moving. Why hasn't it been released on DVD?

Absolutely! This is a nearly perfect film, with probably one of the best performances of Diane Keaton's career. It's absurd that MGM has been sitting on it for so long without releasing it on DVD.
shareIs there any way of getting MGM to release this film on DVD? A petition? A bribe? Blackmail?
(And while we're at it, how about John Boorman's "Point Blank"?)
I totally agree 100% with everyone's comments about this film. The performances are superb and the movie itself had such a "meaty" texture to it. It really stuck with me for a long time. I haven't seen it for at least 15 years and I still have so many images of it still in my mind. That's a quality flick. I also have been waiting for this movie to be released on DVD. Please--Make It Soon!!!
shareMy sentiments exactly!! There is no reason this very fine film should not be on DVD by now. The performances are superb (I can't forget Diane Keaton singing that song in the bathtub after the realization that her marriage is over). Let's hope whoever is now over the MGM library makes a swift move to get this on DVD.
shareThis film is by far the best story of painful family matters I have ever seen. Better even than "Ordinary People", or anything else in that genre I can remember. The performances were incredible, especially Dana Hill and Albert Finney, and every scene had signifigance and depth without ever turning sappy or unrealistic. It was as if these character's pain never left them and we could feel it burning through the screen with every word they spoke. A truly memorable film, if only more people would have seen it.
"It's alligator, darlin'...al-li-gator"
this is keaton's best film work- put this out on dvd- how does one petition this?
hey now cow/i'll make a meal outta u/turn your skull into an ashtray/make a couch outta your hide!
Another voice joins the chorus - this is not only the best film I've ever seen on the subject of the breakup of a family, it gets my vote as the best American film of the past 25 years! (And if you think I'm exaggerating, look up the review that legenedary critic Pauline Kael wrote of at the time of its release -she was rarely so unqualifiedly enthusiastic about a movie)...
Career best performance by Diane Keaton, and a career high behind the camera for Alan Parker as well... I'm tired of watching this on my ancient VHS copy - please, MGM, release this!!!!!
I saw this film at the theater when it came out and was astounded by it's layered work. Diane Keaton was the best she ever was or has been. Albert Finney was incredible.
Then I watched it again and couldn't believe how many little things I missed. I have seen this film at least 20 times and it still haunts me after every viewing for days.
My copy is a copy I made from the original when that wore out and had to transfer to DVD just to keep it going. The original picture was astounding camera work and muted tones.
PLEASE, let it go MGM and release it.

right, quieten down people, i have information concerning "Shoot the Moon" (1982) making a DVD format debut.
Warner Bros. control the distribution rights, since they bought the rights to all MGM films (until 1987) and a couple of Warner Bros films under the MGM catalogue from Ted Turner in 2000. i want to make that clear.
since, warner have a lot of films in their catalogue and still have a lot of old MGM and Warner Bros films to be released for the first time on DVD (including re-releases like Special Editions and Associated Box Sets). this title, among others will be considered for next year for a possible release on the Warner Bros Archive Films list, if it does not come out through cancellation or needs additional work on the new master, then Shoot the Moon, among others "will" be released for definitive in 2008.
now, you can start your moaning.
Well, OP and STM are two very different movies. They have a family crisis at their center, but the execution is vastly dissimilar. OP is a PG-rated, sort of tender drama that stays with the same tone. STM alternates between hate and violence and adultery and deals with a harsher approach, i.e. the foul-mouthed participants. Plus some unexpected black comedy borne out of a couple's disintigration that gets very heated. They're both good movies, but convey their story in radically different styles.

Thanks for the info. Can't wait much longer. Saw the movie years ago and still remember Diane sitting in the bathtub singing.."If I give my heart to you, I must be sure from the very start that you will love me more then her, cuz I could't stand the pain and I would be sad if our new love was in vein". What made it even better was her smoking a joint and crying while singing the song. Oh, how it broke my heart. Why don't the big wigs at the studios get a clue and release stuff before we are all dead. I think waiting for a movie to come out on DVD should not take 14 years. That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
The movie was not a big hit at the box office. It wasn't even a little hit. They're more reluctant to release movies that won't be hot sellers on DVD. We could sit here for hours just naming off movies that aren't on DVD that should be.
sharethat's right, it was never a hit at the box office or much of a success either, then we would know about it. i think that was the same with The Verdict, much praise from critics and avid Newman fans too. you have to remember, that a lot of these films would have nothing, if it wasn't for their royal cult fans who would be willing to watch them
shareColumbia released LOVING (a similar film that Pauline Kael actually compared to SHOOT THE MOON), even though LOVING is even less well known. Tons of crap has been coming out on DVD lately. This certainly deserves a release.
shareThis movie should have been released above 99% of the DVDs released this year. It was quality, something we don't see these days.
shareDiane Keaton's pretty hot now, with her Revlon commercials, and a couple of modest hits with SOMETHINGS GOTTA GIVE and THE FAMILY STONE. Albert Finney's a bit of a living legend. What's keeping you, MGM?
shareIt's a wonderful film and completely overlooked. I taped it from a cable station at least ten years ago but have held onto the vhs. I was watching it last night and it just blew me away. Stark, realistic, and not a happy ending, as I recall. I bought the Eagles "I Can't Tell You Why" after hearing it in the film.
shareMany many less successful films are out on DVD. What gives?
shareI would love to have this movie on DVD.

shareI'm working on the DVD sleeve right now. Be patient.
shareUgh, I can't wait any longer for this brilliant film to get its long-overdue DVD release. I have a taped copy off TCM but still I want to add it to my DVD collection.
shareEntrovert- I hope your working on RICH IN LOVE- INTERNATIONAL VELVET.
share
Introvert - Are you serious? Are you actually working on the DVD release? Don't tease us, man.
If this is for real give us a hint when this will be released. We've waited long enough.
shareIt seems that Introvert is serious, since Shoot the Moon is coming
on November 6th along with other four titles as a box set from Warner.
" Leading Ladies collection VOL2 ".(I'll Cry Tommorow/A big Hand for the
little lady/Up the Down Staircase/Rich and Famous).
