Why is this film rated 7.3? No, really...

... why? I'm not saying it deserves a much higher average rating. I'm saying well over 80% of voters voted this 7+. The rating doesn't mathematically make sense or correlate with other movies that have similar voter proportions. Based on the voter spread it should be more like 8.2, though.

*edit* Oh, I rated this a 9/10 too. Bluth's best work, and in the top 5 animated movies, ever.

Because it makes you think.

Not a good thing.

reply

Wait... What?

Did you just say it was a bad thing for a movie to make you think? Perhaps I misunderstood...

reply

Best to not try to figure out the formula behind the ratings... They employ stuff like who votes how often and things outside of just plain old averages.

The thing to do is to decide how much you like a movie and like it that much. Like Secret of NIMH is definitely a 9/10. I agree the 7.3 doesn't cut it.

Actually most animated films seem to get lower scores at IMDB than you would expect. There's quite a number of reviewers who still write off animated films as a serious medium. That said, the film has some problems (mostly last minute creative decisions by Bluth) that do not necessarily sit well with a critical adult (kids might not notice or care)...and of course, it is adults who review the films.

Just be glad it isn't lower. Some animated films get STOMPED here.

I give it 10/10, a brilliant movie.

10/10 My favourite of all the Don Bluth movies, and my favourite non-Disney animated film. It has a decent rating, but I agree I would like it to be higher as well. Shame it was bastardised by that cheap and unneccessary sequel.

It is rated 7.3 because people rate it that way. They either hate the movie or haven't actually seen it.

In order to fix the situation, fans should go on a mission around the (western) world, forcing everybody to actually watch the movie and/or make them understand why it's not lame/awesome.

I was looking at a bunch of classic animated films, they all have lower scores than you'd expect. With the exception of current 3D stuff and Ghibli Films. However, any scoring system that ranks bile like "Shrek" above a master-piece like The Secret of NIMH is clearly flawed.

I know the OP's question is seriously old but many on this thread didn't understand his post.

He didn't ask why people rated the film low. He asked why it received so many "over 8 star" ratings but it only got 7.3 stars for it's rating. Mathematically it doesn't make sense...

Like someone earlier in the thread said, imdb probably calculates it based on people who voted more than once.

Now now, don't diss on Shrek. The first Shrek is a classic of animated film, and is one of the greatest animated features ever to have been made by Dreamworks.

As for this movie, I think a 7.5 would suffice for it. It's far from perfect, but it is clearly the best that Bluth has ever made, and it is a film with rewatchable value.

How far from perfect is it? Those be fighting words. This film has never gotten the praise it deserves. There is no way in hell that Shrek can be considered a better film than this movie.
