If the Oscar for Best Animated Picture existed in the 80's...

...I think the results should've be like this:

1980: ???
1981: The Fox and the Hound
1982: The Secret of NIMH (or The Last Unicorn)
1983: Twice Upon a Time
1984: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
1985: The Black Cauldron (don't know what else came out that year)
1986: Laputa: Castle in the Sky
1987: The Brave Little Toaster
1988: The Land Before Time (dammit, that totally deserved an oscar! >_<)
1989: Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland

Much as I love Land Before Time, I'm pretty sure Akira would have dominated 1988. It's a landmark in popularizing Japanese animation in the West as well as one of the best animated films ever made.

Maybe years before, they should have given Best Animated Film to Watership Down.

I don't know about The Black Cauldron winning because remember, even though that was probably the only animated film of 1985, not a lot of people liked and today it still gets very negative reviews. It's good to some degree with its use of dark material like the sorcery and the undead, but I think it deserves better in how the story could have been constructed and how developed the characters were. The problem was that the Disney animators at that time didn't know that well how to construct a story and give characters enough personality.

The Secret of NIMH is definitely more emotional, more character-based, and more cohesive in its story, as well as being beautiful in its fantasy and gritty in its darkness.

I don't know, you're assuming the films that should win would win. The Academy chose Brave over Wreck-it-Ralph this year, which is just mind blogging.

Oh...good point.
