Nostalgia Critic liked it, so...

If you do not, you are a heretic that should be burned for disagreeing with the Internet God.

I'm not being serious here, mind.

But still, if a talented actor and comedian like Doug Walker likes this film, it must be good!

It looks the worst from all the movies in his favorites list. But if he thinks that this animated film is as good as Spirited Away, then maybe it really is (or maybe Doug is an idiot, which is also believable). :D

So he's an idiot because he has opinion different from your own? That's some maturity you got going there.

Well, he is an idiot, but in a good way (I mean, he's torturing himself by watching and reviewing terrible movies once a weak... :D ). Also, I'm not saying that The Secret of NIMH is a bad film (I haven't seen it), but it just looks like it, but judging from NC other favorites, it might be (and probably is) a masterpiece.

Advice for you: calm down, stop being so paranoid. NC is one of my favorite people on internet (didn't you noticed that there's a smile in my post right after calling him an idiot?)
Why do you think that everyone here on IMDB wants to bash all of your favorite movies and celebrities? But you know what? I like your signature. It just perfectly fits your personality... :D

*beep* the NC! I've been mad ever since he said the crappy animated 10 commandments was better then the classic one.

reply

Doug Walker makes a living off of the internet. That is pretty hard to do. While he may not be a mainstream celebrity it doesn't mean he is a no talent hack. If he was he wouldn't be able to support himself from his website.

1. Secret of Nimh has always been one of my favorite animated movies long before the NC endorsed it, so watch this movie if you haven't - it's a masterpiece.

2. He may not have Rolfe's directing skills, but I think the Nostalgia Critic is as clever and hardworking as ever. He releases a 20-minute video every week, and if you've ever edited videos, it can be time consuming. Remember that Rolfe only makes a video every month or so.

Without getting into the discussion of which is better, i would like to correct you here. Rolfe does a bunch of other stuff while hes not doing AVGN. If you take a look at all the other things he have done besides AVGN you'll see that the guy has a real passion for movies and making them. He really lives, eat and breathe movies.

That said. I watch both of their clips when they release them. I can't really pick a favorite since none of them are my favorite. That award goes to Yahtzee! :D

reply

I agree about Rolfe's non-AVGN stuff. I especially love his Halloween countdowns. I just wish he'd review bad movies! I'd love to see his take on, for example, the Star Wars Prequels, but I guess that's not his style.

The thing about Rolfe is that he seems like he is sick of the nerd. Notice how he only does it once a month and it is definitely not as creative or as funny as it use to be. It seems to me like his passion lies elsewhere but he keeps up the nerd because it is his bread and butter. Doug seems like he is still enjoying what he does. The commentaries show quite a bit of thought goes into each episode.

stop right there- march right down to a blockbuster this instant and watch this film. it is an amazing movie. one of my childhood favorites, and if youw atch it thn you will understand, too.

as a kid, i liked this movie because i felt like it didnt "talk down to me" the way disney did (i absolutely HATED every single song in every single disney movie ever made, and that continues to this day)

reply

I've always liked this movie, even as a child! I rented it at Blockbuster, when I was 6 or 7. ^_^

So, as you could imagine, I was very surprised when Doug mentioned it on his "Top 11 underrated classics" countdown. I didn't even think he would've heard of it, let alone like it! :)

You know Nostalgia Critic is just a character, right? In his honest reviews as Doug Walker he's very tolerant and tame, in no way a hater.

It's good, I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece (though VERY good by recent standards). I agree with whoever said Doug "nostalgia critic" Walker seems to have a penchant for letting atmosphere and mood take precedence over other aspects of filmmaking. His favorites list is a pretty strong indication of that, and I think this film is the perfect example. It has LOADS of atmosphere; a very distinctly dark and creepy mood accompanying the otherwise pretty bland story. I remember the book being a lot better (read it after seeing the movie), delving more into the backstory of the rats of NIMH, and the characters being a lot more interesting. Still the movie is quite enjoyable. I just think aside from the fantastic animation that serves to create a perfect setting for the story, the rest doesn't measure up. Mrs. Brisby is very good, but the pacing is pretty uneven, and I think it shows that they really worked hard to compress the story elements to fit within a running time befitting to a kid's movie (77 minutes). Had this been made with more recent cartoon standards ("serious" cartoons being viable), and thus being able to work under a longer running time, and mixed with the production quality it already has, I think it could have been truly amazing.

Impeccable logic.

So I watched this movie because Nostalgia Critic recommended it and... I really didn't like it.

Maybe it was the animation style. I had trouble getting into this story with these big eyed, cutesy looking mice- the visuals just didn't draw me in and that's a big thing with me. I didn't really care for the voice acting either. Mrs. Brisby was okay but Dom Deluise just gets on my nerves! His voice sticks out like a sore thumb. I didn't really care for the shrew character either.

Overall, though, it was just sort of dull. It didn't have anything bringing me in. I noticed they chose to go a darker route for a children's film; they had no musical numbers and few humorous moments. That's fine, not every children's movie has to be cheery and whimsical, but you've got to make up for it with some compelling drama and suspense. And honestly, I felt none of that. I never doubted that anything was going to turn out any less than okay.

It's interesting Doug likes this film so much because one of its biggest downfalls (in my opinion) was having a dull, cliched villain. If you watch any of his Disneycember videos you know he can't stand the power hungry, dull villain. Yet that's exactly what this movie has. I'm not seeing where he finds the appeal here.

Not impressed. 3/10.

It is good in every objective sense.

Just watched Doug and Rob do a video about the new NIMH movie. Sounds pretty awful. One thing that came to mind though is that I love it when Doug gushes about a movie he really loves.

When he totally digs a film and talks very passionately about his love for it, it really comes across well. He never comes off as some kind of ridiculous 'fanboy' at all. He always speaks with eloquence about why he likes the film so much, and listening to him talk about it really makes me want to watch the films he's talking about. He gushed about Frozen, and it made me want to watch Frozen.........again.......for like the MILLIONTH TIME. See...I can't gush.
