I didn't like this movie

So why does pretty much everyone see it as some sorta godlike creation? The animations ok but the storys kinda average. I was expecting some kinda epic adventure after she speaks the owl but all I got was a story about mice moving house.

reply

When did you first see this movie? That probably has something to do with it.

reply

Exactly agent. The experimenting on the mice was somewhat interesting but I just got bored. Why would kids like this? There's just nothing to hold their attention.

reply

When I was 6 years old, I didn't understand it, but I still liked it.

"I got in one little fight and my mom got scared"- Will Smith (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)

reply

Part of the appeal to me was because it wasn't an epic adventure. The small scope allows for character development as well as avoids the typical cliches of cartoon movies

reply

OP, the story is very special (the book more than the movie) in that it makes something as mundane as moving house, into an epic movie exploring the life of mice and rats

reply

it is an epic on an interior scale, not external spectacle. then again think of those things happening from a mouse's point of view and picture a story of humans going to and beyond their limits like that.

reply

It wasn't just rats moving a house, theres also the whole thing about them getting smarter and escaping a place where they were being experimented on. Theres the whole murder plot and swordfight. Theres plenty to keep a kids attention, well more for boys probably not so much for girls. I watched it many times as a kid and never got bored. Theres good action and funny parts, its kinda dark and theres actually some violence.

Stellar animated film. Get rid of that annoying comic relief bird and it would've been perfect. I thought the story was quite interesting.

reply

I agree it is a stellar film as are most of Bluth's works. GOD I wish he was still in the game like he used to be. Kids today (while they still have access to gems like NIMH), aren't being ooooh'd and aaaah'd by anything except the next 3D Pixar cash cow. Like so many other forms of entertainment, we have traded substance for flashiness.

Regarding the crow Jeremy...he was there to get some chuckles in an otherwise tense and stressful movie. Dom DeLuise was commonly the comic relief in Bluth's movies: Itchy from "All Dogs go to Heaven", Tiger from "An American Tail", etc. He's a great voice actor and thought he did his job here well.

But MAN I miss the glory days of hand drawn animation with great original soundtracks. Seems like all kids flicks these days revolve around sassy CGI animals dubbed over with whatever song is hip at the time.

reply

Your not the only, I also found this kind of overrated.

reply

It's overrated, in my opinion. I saw it for the first time when I was really young- probably like 5 or 6. I didn't really like it because it scared me but I remember being a little older and respecting it for being pretty badass for a kid's movie. I'm 17, and just watched it again (I'm sure I saw it once or twice more when I was younger but I don't really remember) and I was very underwhelmed. The animation was good, especially for an 80's movie but I didn't find it particularly visually stunning... The whole story was very predictable and a little cliche. The crow annoyed me. Credit where credit is due though: the voice acting was EXCELLENT. I personally think All Dogs Go to Heaven (despite being FAR more problematic than NIMH with the terrible songs and the crocodile weirdness) is a much better movie.
