Why does everyone think this movie's 'scary?'

I was between 6 and 7 years old when I first saw this film, and I LOVED it, with only 1 scary scene being: Mrs. Brisby walking into the rose bush and then meeting that guard rat with the lightning spear! 0~0 *shudders*

But other than that I still loved it as a kid. :3

Why does everyone think this movie's 'SCARY?'
Bcz it is. That's one of the things that makes it so cool, too. There's blood, violence, and even one of the the heroes says "damn". WOW! I think I originally saw this movie at the drive-in. The Owl scene was pretty scary at the time, and most of the 'locations' in the movie have a very scary feel to them.

Because we think so.

I remember the rats learning how to read freaked me out when I was younger, but not enough to make me stop watching this movie. :)

i think the cat Dragon was really scary! He looks like the monster like cats from the movie American Tail.

Because of the rats. They were evil in a way that was not common in children's films back then. As I child I was really afraid of them - and hence they were one of the main reasons I loved the film so much!

I personally don't find The Secret of NIMH scary, dark and haunting yes, but not scary. Though there are two scenes that did frighten me, one was Mrs Brisby's encounter with Brutus, I think it had a lot to do with the animation on Brutus himself and the part with the great owl. I also have to admit seeing Jenner trying to kill Justin from behind at the end before he gets killed had a somewhat foreboding feel to it.

You know, that's funny. I used to feel the same way about those two scenes too! =D But maybe not the Great Owl, he didn't frighten me much...

You just admitted to a scene scaring you as a kid! Hypocrite! :P It's not really scary by today's standards, or to adults, but as a kid seeing this movie for the first time it definitely had scary moments. Especially back in the early 80s, when movies were nowhere near as vulgar as explicit as they are now, NIMH had a very dark style to it. Well, I guess Watership Down had it beat by a few years, but I didn't see that movie until well after NIMH so I had no reference of what constituted a "dark" animated movie.

Scary or not, NIMH is the all time best animated movie of the 80s and beyond :)

Alright! I admit, that "NIMH" did scare me a little bit.
I just meant it like, it wasn't scary enough to give me nightmares as a kid. ^^

i wouldn't say this movie is 'scary' but dark as hell. yes, that one scene when mrs. brisby first enters the rosebush is creepy, but it's mostly the older, adult content. they were allowed to say 'damn' for god sake! and now as an adult watching it, you realize the subject matter goes WAY over your head as a kid.

Not scary, but very creepy.

The rats were not "evil" as somebody said, but them being smart as hell was kind of freaky at the time. All of the animals(rats, owl, mice, etc, etc, etc...) that had been experimented on by NIMH, were creepy.

Add to the fact that NIMH had found them out, and was coming to wipe them out, just adds to this.

I grew up on this film and never found it scary. Dark and disturbing - if ultimately uplifting - yes. I actually re-watched it today for the first time in probably in more than 25 years and found myself appreciating it on different levels than before - namely the colors and the score.

For a G-rated movie, it was. There were numerous moments that would have spooked kids and even one completely unnecessary expletive.

But it remains one the great acheivements in modern-day animation.
